How much line is left on your refill spool

I absolutely hate it when I spool a reel with a used refill spool and end up not having enough line to fill my reel. To prevent this I've done two things. First was to keep track of approximately how many times I can use a refill spool before I hit the danger point of not having enough. Second, each time I fill a reel I put a hash mark on the refill spool with one of the sharpies I keep in the boat.

Depending on the spool size I get 4-5 reel spools. I use a lot of backing and change line often, so the number of refills one can get will vary.

The catch in the system is braided line and my Punch Rod. I only keep a very small amount of braid on it (don't need a lot for punching) So it gets short hash 

A refill spool likely not to fill my reel will be moved to the household junk drawer for use with hanging photo's or sewing.

I probably have at least a dozen spools with 20-30 yards left on them. While I find uses for them, I prefer not wasting money. I've decided to try to buy my Tatsu and PowerPro in 1000/1500 yard spools the next time I purchase. It will only hurt once.

I have learned to use those short spools for leaders, since I started buying braid in bulk from china I use it a lot more with mono leaders.

I use my left over line for my punch stick, If there is 20' on there, I'm good, backing on the rest of the spool.

yep, you guys that use a 6' fenwick, three line guides deep, do not need near as much good line on a reel as some of us that are fishing 30' deep and making a long cast on top of that. .

on a 150 yd. spool of braid, i run it out across the yard, and then cut it in half, and get two refill out of it.  when the spool is getting a bit low to really cast well, i take the braid off and add i bit more filler and spool the braid back on.  when that braid is not enough for deep fishing, i save it for a narrow spool reel for pitching in shallower water.

Thanks Mike, that is a simple, but really great tip overlooked throughout the years.  I always use cheap backing, usually cheap clear mono.  From now on I will get some cheap colored line.

Since switching over to some more expensive line I find my Trilene XT green does great for backing line.  Only reel that I use the same line to fill the spool a new reel and my crankbait heaver.  When I respool those I use the present line for backing and longer sections of new line.

I use 1lb or bulk spools, this way I have fewer shorties.

Because there is always a chance of a long runner in the salt, I always use fresh line, even on my backing for braids, and the backing is very short.

Shorties become leaders usually, unless the are a light LB test, then they might become breakaway traces for weights in snaggy areas.

I just re-spooled my buddy's reels, there were quite a few of them, and they are all high capacity reels, I went through almost three miles of line.  I had left over 40lb and 20lb line.  They became double drop rigs that I tied for him.  Came up with 6 out of all of the leftovers, gotta say that was pretty good.

I started buying bulk spools years ago to end the nightmare of respooling.
