I threw a spinnerbait on the SV today for a little while. Cast well and was easy to retrieve the big bladed spinner. I was throwing it on an 8gear so I am guessing on a slower ratio it would be even better.
I've thrown them on the Type R (Not CT Type R) and that worked out well too. Never used a CT Type R or an HLC.

Rick, on a high gear reel you just have to slow it down down a bit, advantage of the high gear however is that you can wake the spinnerbait a lot easier than reeling very fast on a 6 gear.

That's true it easier to wake the spinnerbait. But the slower gear ratio reels have more cranking power. Makes it easier to retrieve (as in less effort). I have to admit that even with the high gear ratio of this reel, it felt like it cranked it in just fine.

I don't find cranking to be an issue on higher speed reels. Although most of my reels are 7's or high 7's. I only have one 6 speed and I have't used that one in while... lol I did have a 5 speed once and I returned it the following day.  lo

Didn't say it was an issue.

But it is science.

Agreed. I was casting into the wind with my spinnerbait today. No problems there. Wind was probably between 10-15mph

thanks guys,
I thought sv's were for light baits but it makes sense with a bait that can catch that much wind.

I have a zillion HLC.  When they say hyper long cast, they mean it  lo.  Even downwind I have to crank the magnetic brake down.  FWIW, the main brakes are set on 7 I think.

With a 1/2 ounce spinner and a smooooooth cast, it really flies.  Try and overpower it, you're getting a professional over run..  lo

The standard CT would do everything you need and save you a few bucks. I have both the standard and type R and there isn't much difference in the way they fish, if any.

zippyduck

I can get the ct type-r cheaper that is why I didn't consider the ct. And I already have one and love it. That being said my sv's can't be beat so I will be going that direction.

Zip, I've got the Tatula HLC if you want to check it out sometime. I got the X version for frogging. Haven't used it yet, but it seems like a quality reel.

If you're willing to come to the dark side with me, the new Chronarch MGL is a might fine reel too. I've already got 3 of them.

all 3 are great. with diawa I have found the more expensive the smother it is. But you can usually get the cheapest and turn it into what you want for half the price.
