Jumper Cables

I keep a pair of jumper cables in my boat and also in my truck. When you need them -- you need them! Well the other day a friend asked me to check out why his Merc 75 HP was not cranking. I used my jumper cables to go direct from his battery to his starter. The starter was dead so we replaced it. But when placing my jumper cables back in my boat I discovered the insulation was cracked all around the cables exposing both the wires. The insulation crack was right where there was a metal clamp holding the two cables together. A potential short. I have no idea how old they are, I may have bought them or they may have belonged to my wife's long ago deceased step-dad. Plus the clamps were rusty. So I decided I deserved a good pair so I went to Auto Zone and purchased a new heavy duty pair, 2 gauge, 20' long, with copper clamps. My tip is to remind everyone to check the condition of those long forgotten jumper cables.

Tks for the reminder.  I carry jumper cables in my Stratos also.

Like you said when you need them you need them. Great tip.

I've switch to a jump pack, very handy and takes up little room.

Those new mini jump packs are amazing ! When I get back fishing again eventually, I will have one of those new small pocket type in the boat and always a good idea to have one in the vehicles also.
Stop by the Garage and let me know if you have Maintenance issues that you need assistance with.

You just have to remember to check the charge on it from time to time to make sure it's charged up. ;D

Just a little tip I use.  I bought a set of cables just long enough for the boat that were is a zip bag.  Sealed the cables in my vacuum sealer and threw them in the boat.  Haven't needed them yet, but they are ready for use!

The small jump packs are not expensive and I see where they would be better because they take up so little room. I have a pair of jumpers in my truck  I made from leftover #4 welding cable when I worked for the welding supply company, very flexible, man are they nice and no, they are not for sale. lo
