all braids are made out of spectra or dyneema, and yes, there are only a few manufactures make those two fibers.

bo

Bo, guess what? Spectra and Dyneema fibers are one and the same thing! Just two different fancy names for the same product. The fibers are also known as PE fibers, or:

From wikipedia:

"Polyethylene (abbreviated PE) or polyethene (IUPAC name polyethene or poly(methylene)) is the most common plastic. The annual global production is around 80 million tonnes.[3] Its primary use is in packaging (plastic bags, plastic films, geomembranes, containers including bottles, etc.). Many kinds of polyethylene are known, with most having the chemical formula (C2H4)n. PE is usually a mixture of similar polymers of ethylene with various values of n."

The creation of these fibers is interesting. They first create the plastic goo and then do what is known as a gel spin process which is basically the same thing as making cotton candy out of the goo into stretched fibers.

The key to the process is in making those gel spun fibers.

You know how a rubber band works? It is really flexible and stretchy when not under load, but stretch it out to just before the breaking point it is no longer stretchable.

This is precisely what is done to the plastic PE goo when being gel spun into fibers. The elastic property of the plastic is stretched to just before the snapping point and then solidified right there frozen in the already stretched to its maximum state. That is a gel spun PE fiber ready to weave into braid line. It does not stretch any more because the plastic fibers are already stretched out as much as it can be.

And this is the key to how our super lines are made. Braid line is nothing more than stretched plastic fibers.

KastKing is a brand that is quickly increasing in price as their name becomes more well known in the USA. They are obviously doing something different in the branding and marketing game that is putting them out there much more so than other Chinese companies that are not getting in the branding/marketing game as aggressively.

So the price for KastKing is starting to climb, but honestly I would not be able to say their line is any better than most other Chinese braid line manufacturers.

The one brand I have bought the most from and had no problems with is "Spectra" brand. Red Wolf, Premier, Spider, Bravefishermen, and Gagadaijin are some of the others I have purchased and I have found them to all have a consistent quality to them. But the one thing I really love about the Chinese braid lines is that they are all dry lines which is important to me for not poisoning the environment with.

And with as cheap as this Chinese braid line is with free shipping to your front door it is a dirt cheap expense even if you don't like it, not much is lost. It can't hurt to try it. I did. And I have not looked back since. Power Pro who???
thanks for the info

Honestly I understand the braid "poison" thing. However launching my two stroke boat from my gas driven truck.. kinda seems like braid coating is the least of my worries.

If you use Diawa's you'll die. :shocking: j~w Everyone who ate spinach in 1865 died, everybody who ate tofu in 1880 died. You will die it's more sure than taxes that you will assume room temperature, just a matter of when. Every time you fart you are poisoning the environment, every time you breath you are poisoning the environment, every time you turn on a light you are poisoning the environment

Well, back to EXPENSE.  8) lo

Out of strict  STRICT boredom..... ;).......I was checking things I just BARELY have an interest in and found this, OH OH lo.

Honeywell's Spectra fiber technology continues to support a $500 million recreational sport-fishing line market in the U.S. and a $1.5 billion market globally.
So that means, America buys 1/3 of their product........BOY YOU GUYS BUY A LOT OF POWERPRO.  ~roflmao

Honeywell makes the Spectra fiber for Power Pro and I was looking into PP's recent line, made of Spectra HT which they use in their Maxcuatro line.

Just a hunch, seeing Spectra lines have a
Chemical, Fungal, and UV Resistance
Spectra fiber exhibits high resistance to many
types of substances, from seawater to sulfuric
acid. In outdoor applications, its resistance to
fungal growth, corrosion, and ultraviolet light
makes it suitable for the harshest of climates

with or without a coating.......its going to be around for a VERY LONG TIME.

Honeywell has a 'patented process' for making their  Spectra line.
So, not all Spectra lines are created equally.

Oh, they won't say/I can't find if it's made in China BUT seeing the company itself brags about it's expansions globally with emphasis in India and China........I think it is.  ;)

Anyway this has been a fun thread but I've learned about as much as I EVER wanted to know about Braided Line............oh and Honeywell is an  AMERICAN CORPORATION with a Global presence.......which basically means......their scientists are working out of New Jersey and their products are MADE globally.  ~roflmao

I agree, it's a cool product for the price.

SFL BassHunter

I had seen some good reviews on "Spectra" brand braid on youtube.

Wouldn't mind getting a spool of that, to do a break strength test vs kastking vs powerpro. It would be a cool little experiment.
If Kastking or Spectra under perform, I have no problem with sticking to PP. Poison coat and all.

Just for the record, Power Pro is owned and an operation of Shimano. And you are correct that Honeywell is the Spectra supplier.

^^ True and we like Shimano!

PP is great line. Certainly prefer it over Suffix, Spiderwire and Stren which are the ones I have tried.

I do like Trilene's braid also. Good stuffs.

About lifespan:
Nylon monofilaments remain for 600 years, fluorocarbon longer, Spectra and Dyneema even longer.

Found in the Fish Florida web site.
http://www.fishfloridatag.org/new-fishing-line-safer-for-environment/

But Bioline was bought by Eagle Claw and they discontinued it....I think because the line disintegrated even when dry and in package.

Soooooo....the search was on!  ;D

And I found THIS!
http://www.toray.com/products/fibers/fib_013.html

But it's only sold in Japan.
So I need LMG and you Japan purchasers to find it for me.....PLEASE!  :)

How FAST I digress!  ~roflmao

One problem with this, is line isn't like a bait that you use a few time and discard. Unless you are going to dry your line on your spool when you finish fishing wouldn't it start to deteriorate? Or does it have to constantly be in water to deteriorate?

I really don't know?
I have my fears, some rational, most not.

Biggest challenge will be finding it for a reasonable SHIPPING cost.
They ONLY SELL it in Japan. :(
And it's hard to drop 3Xs the price of the line to have it shipped to you PLUS having no idea if I even want/like it.
Toray is a company with a good reputation.......but STILL?

Oh well, I'm sure to do some research trying to find it.........or wait for a better exchange rate.  lo

Anyone else who has ideas about getting Japan products sent to America, feel free to share it with me.

LMG.......thank you SO MUCH for helping to guide me in a direction!  ~c~ ~c~ ~c~

Sounds like you should quit while you're ahead and by ahead I mean not completely broke from getting stuff shipped from Japan lol.

Stick to the stuff you can get at the walmart, it will make your life easier!

floridafishingfool - i appreciate the effort you put into informing us of the toxins in powerpro....i for one take this very seriously. there is such a high level of poison throughout our environment, our food, and our water. i've seen threads where people discuss, extensively, leaving fishing line and trash around our lakes and ponds, and how rude it is that these litterers are messing up our fishing areas. if we care about this, then why don't we care about the pollution dumped in the waters that is causing so much cancer and sickness. some here have mocked your concerns - we're all going to die of something.... yeah, well so is our wildlife....massive fish kills are mysteriously happening all over the world - species are disappearing everyday....i will be steering clear of powerpro and following your lead by using uncoated braid - thanks for your concern and trying to help by sharing this information
