With the Yen being at a low again, I decided to pull the trigger on a new Shimano. Though Im not crazy about the SVS braking system, at the price it was hard to resist. This is the JDM model of our Curado 70. I can tell you that this thing out of the box is killer smooth. Kinda puts my heavily modded Curado50E to shame. The looks are soo good, that this is the first Shimano I have ever owned that I have been satisfied with the way it looks right out of the box. Finally, a Scorpion without that ugly wine red color. This is more of a grey/black with red flake.

Here are some pics, and water testing coming soon.

Glad to see you with another Shimano! I'm really digging my 70 XG.

I got it spooled up with 30# Power Pro and ready for some casting. Testing out the freespool on the reel before putting line on, I can tell you the bearings are nothing short of impressive. I am really finding nothing thats gonna need to be changed on this reel. Even the drag star is aluminum and quite stylish.

Did quite a bit of casting with this thing. I will tell you that spool is fast. I actually had 4 brakes on and the dial on like 4 and this thing was singing a 3/8oz bait a good 35-40yds. Took a bit to get used to these brakes cause Im used to 2 on. The spool is just way too fast even with the easiest of casts. It was a hard one to tame, but to my surprise, with the 4 blacks and set to 4, this thing has a no worries cast that travels way out there.  Its a smooth and well built reel out of the box.

Actually let me think about it. Was a 1/8oz weight. Maybe a bit lighter total.

have you had enough time with it to make a comparison to your sv103?

You cant compare those reels. 2 totally different purpose reels that accel in their own uses.

and since you have both of those reels, what will you use each for?

Even though you would want to look for me to give you that advice, my situation is probably not the best one. See my SV103 has been modded with a 105 spool (shallower for less line and lighter bait useage). But, to give you some information, the SV103 has 40lb braid and is being used to burn UV type worms through grass and cover, with long casts. Thuss the reason I need heavy duty. Not only that, but being a huge fan of the TD Zillion platform, it fits the bill with the extra fast gearing to boot.

Now, the Scorpion 70 is spooled with 30lb braid and will be doing duty for lighter T rig applications. Say baits around 1/4 to 3/8oz. Short targeted casts, and many of them. Thuss using the XG model. However this reel is no slouch in the casting department, and 50 to 60yd casts can be done with ease.

Most people would be using the SV103 for frogging or jigs, which thats the best applications for that reel especially the XS (7.9 ratio) which is what I have. The 103 spool will hold plenty of heavy line, and have killer casting with the SV spool. They also have the 6.3 ratio which you can do many of things with that particular gearing. I have other OG Zillions that perform many other duties, in other ratios, so I did not need that particular one. Prior to the SV103XS, the only way to get a ratio faster than the 7.3 (TypeR and Coastal) was to find a J Dream or a Megabass IP79. So this is where the appeal comes in as well.

Is there anything I might be missing you need answered?
