The Reel Monkey Has Spoken -- Shimano Aldebaran

The reel monkey blames LMG and some jayhawk lover for this one. 

So, I was a lews guy since I got back into fishing.  Tried LMG's SV103, then bought a Tatula "just to try it out".  Then bought the FCOKC team member's other Tatula...and I just bought a dang Shimano Aldebaran 50 from the bay. 

Specific purposes are for small cranks and jerks, small tubes...etc.   

LMG, your up!!  Whats your next buy??

Actually I have not used it all that much but it did feel a bit better.  They are not on a jig bite right now. 

But they are on a chatterbait/spinnerbait bite.  metatanium?  or zillion SV TW?

Metanium MGL and Zillion SV are both amazing reels. Toss up really. Whichever feels better in hand. The Zillion TW SV is basically and upgraded Tatula CT. So they are both gonna feel the same in hand.

If you're going to get an SV Daiwa, I'd go after the SV103. Thats the one that I bought from the Trap in Bama when we all went up there on Saturday. Otherwise I'd listen to this guy ^ and get an MGL

Brian still has them. I got all black parts to get rid of that gawd awful purple, bearings and still came in under 3 bills

Mine has a few other extras that make it NOT a 3 bill reel anymore

If you have the fundage, the MGL. I'm seriously considering a 3rd.

Light weight, powerful, it's a Shimano and it's basically tricked from the factory.

96mm handle on 4 bearings
Lightweight spool with bearing
Ability to install a bearing in the worm gear
The spool shaft is supported by a spring loaded bearing. Just feels much tighter.
I prefer centrifugal breaking over mag
Just overall more refined.

Keep in mind there is a big price difference between the two though.

very unimpressed so far.  both the cast control knob and the other dial were set to max tightness.  I could barely get the side dial to even move.  I had to pop the side plate of because it was jammed so far on 6.  Why?  If there is a good reason for this ok...but I have never seen that before.  Isnt that counter-intuitive?

handle does not spin like I thought it should.  Spool is ok.  Brakes are all set in the off position.

The side plate dial shouldn't really affect the side plate at all. The cast control knob being too tight is what will make the side plate hard to come off.

My guess is there is a shat ton of grease packed into the main drive and all the bearings are packed full of grease and oil. Strip it down and flush the bearings out real good and grease the main gears correctly. Shimano is notorious for packing their reels to the max with grease. The average Joe doesn't do any reel maintenance
