can anyone tell me the difference between the garmin 5dv and the 5cv. I know the 5cv is the newer model but what do you gain with the new model versus the 5dv. thanks

Hopefully someone familiar with Garmin can help out.

Every where I look they even have the same part number?

This is the only statement I can find different about the two units and it relates to the DV

"You also can upgrade to high-performance Garmin CHIRP technology, which provides crystal-clear sonar images with even more remarkable target separation and resolution from shallow to deeper depths. For better fishing, bottom contours are more visible, even at higher speeds, and signal noise can be suppressed at greater depths to provide a more timely interpretation of what's below."

So maybe the DV has and upgrade option that the CV does not have. Both have CHIRP, I don't know what the difference is in High-Performance CHIRP.

the DV is 249 and the cv is 299, I am a penny pincher so if I am not gaining anything I really need I would like to save the $50 for something else

I would assume the High Performance Chirp technology is going to give you a better image. That said, CHIRP is a very good image in it's self. So I guess this will depend on your budget and the image you're looking for. The Garmin sites touts both as very good units.

We have a couple members that are very familiar with Garmin and they'll be by in the next day or two to help out.

I can vouch for CHIRP. I love the imaging!

I've been watching the Garmin stuff hoping to eventually get a second unit for the front. Something has changed in relation to the Down Vu and the transducer. I suspect it's related to the pending litigation involving their transducer design. CV stands for ClearVu. It's still CHIRP.

thank you that info, now you have me thinking would I be better off putting transducer in the bow or the stern if I want to avoid running over things that could damage my boat

My EchoMap 73 SV came with the GT51M ducer. It's 9" long and 2.5" wide. I mounted it on the transom for now but plan to buy the bracket and shield to mount it on the bottom of my jackplate. The Striker units come with the GT20 ducer. It's 6" long and 2" wide. Still a pretty big thing.

CV stands for ClearVu, it is the renaming if what was DownVu or SideVu due to a lawsuit.
To get around the patent infringement (so far), the CV transducer's imaging element is tilted some so it doesn't physically copy the other brands that had the technology first.

Except it just renamed DownVu.  SideVu is OK.  Go figure.
