A couple years ago I tied some jigs to match the hatch of a local lake I was fishing. Never had much luck with them. I had two more on the shelf that have been sitting since I tied them. I decided to break these out and tie up some more and have another go around.

Got 10 3/8 oz heads and 10 1/2 oz heads ordered along with a bunch more skirt material.

Hope the white works better for you this time around.

Thanks Lip. The lake I was fishing, the owner wanted a bunch of 1-2 pounders culled. Every fish I cleaned had bellies full of crappie. I matched these jigs to the crappie and never had a bite lo. I've got some other colors to try this time too.

Hmmmm.  Rock, I'm throwing a jig pattern very similar to the one in the pic.  Has accounted for ~75% of the fish I caught last 2 outings.  Now, I'm not swimming it.  I'm fishing it like as a crawfish imitator - crawling, short hops, dead sticking it on bluffs and sharp drops.

Ain't it funny how it works like that sometimes???

Indeed!

Thats one thing I like about that jig head. If can be used for both. That said, I've never thought of using a lighter color for that presentation though. I'll give it a shot.

The first time I tried white I made it on the fly. 1/4 ounce ball head jig painted white, put a white skirt on along with a white Swimming Chunk from zoom. nothing was hitting and I was desperate for a bite, I was surprised, I put a limit in the boat.

Rock - keep in mind crawfish molt (usually in the spring but sometimes multiple times during a year.)  When they're in their soft shell mode they're light colored.  Not so effective in stained or dirty water but patterns like this have been money for me in clear water.

The addition of a couple strands of color - orange, chartreuse, and light blue - can turn your pattern into a killer bluegill or blue crab imitator.  Just sayin' . . .

Thanks. I have an orange brown craw I tie in the spring that has produced very well. I got some Blue pearl strands that look like the green and purple but a blue to try out as well. These have got me excited to tie

Glow in the dark crawfish? Never heard of that before!

31airborne

Not really glow in the dark.  The lighting in the posters Rock hung up there are a little misleading.  Soft shell crawfish are translucent however so they do stand out.  They don't stay in this mode for very long, usually only for a few days.  They are especially vulnerable in this stage.  They're like candy for a bass.

I have heard that before....that when they are blue-ish colored like that they are very soft.

Is this one of the reasons that black and blue works so well?  The blue tips of a paca craw makes the bass think this is an easily digestible meal?

Joe - my personal opinion (no data to back this up) is black/blue works so well because it stands out in the water.  Bass have little trouble seeing it against the background it's being presented in.  That said, in lakes w/ lots of submerged grass the craws can get really dark.  That includes a dark shade of blue.  It's really pretty spectacular.

Let's go to school on this. How many colours do you all see in each photo?

Depends on how much you are drinking or what you're popping!!! ~roflmao
If you google you r version of the DEC you should be able to find a lot of info on the craws in your state/province, color, habitat, species, etc.

Well Mr. Farty pants, the reason I ask the question is because if you look closely you will see six or so dominant colours in the green one and eight or so in the blue one. The trick is to look closely at ALL the colours in the prey and mimic them the best you can. Pinks blues greys greens white black and many shades of each. Looking at Rocks original lure he has picked up well on some of the colours. If you can find jig heads that will accommodate two skirts positioned one behind the other you will be able to present a more realistic array of colours that those prey fish possess. It will increase the number of fish you catch. Those weedless jigs are deadly. Also, if you can manage a trailer crazy glued to the setup, cut down so it's not so big, you will hook up even more! Cheers and happy fishing. FC.

John, I was teasing! I tie, actually cast paint and tie my own so I can tie several colors into the same jig and do. I said, and posted it in tips, that if you go to your version of our DEC you can probably find all the info including pics to set you on the right track for choosing colors. We don't find white craws but the fish my "think" it's a baitfish or even hit it out of curiosity.

I got my skirting material yesterday in the mail. The iridescent blue I picked up is going to rock. I have some Big Bites Baits 5" cane thumpers that will match it to a T. Just waiting on my heads, and I will get to work.

Just to be clear, since we are going back to school...white is not a color, its the absence of all colors.  ;D
My wife says she is gonna leave me if I go fishing one more time........lord how I will miss that woman.
