I got a new toy to replace my beat up PQ. The PQ served me well and did everything I asked of it for a little over 2 years. But the time has come for its retirement.

Replacing the PQ on my Dobyns 765 Flip Rod is the Daiwa Tatula Tactical (TW exclusive).
What I was looking for in a Punching Reel:
30+ IPT
7 + Gear ratio
Good Drag
Long handle
Had to match my Rod.

I fell In Love with the matte black finish on this reel and the 13 fishing concept a. Ultimately decided on the Tatula.

8:1:1 gear ratio
13.2 lb max drag
33.9 IPT
100mm handle
7.9 oz isn't the lightest out there but it isn't as heavy as the PQ either.

It is an interesting reel and kind of a Frankenstein but not in a bad way!

The frame is from the Tatula type R with an all aluminum frame and side plate.
The drag star is plastic from the CT
The 100mm handle is from the Tatula HD
The spool and guts are from the Tatula Type R
MagForce z with 20 brake settings

The reel feels nice to hold and even though it's large it fits perfectly in my hands. Lower profile than my Scorpion DC 7.

Being all aluminum it feels sturdy like your holding something that's not a toy.
It has a large spool and can hold more line than any of my other reels.

I am excited to take this puppy for a test run but of course it's raining.

It is wide. But it seems to fit well in my hand. It also has a wide spool.

Thanks Lou! Gotta take extra care of this one. I am sure scratches and imperfections will show much more on this reel than others.

Possibly, but if you only use the reel when your on a boat, and keep it covered the rest of the time, the reel should be fine for a long while. Now if you  take it bank fishing all bets are off.

Yeah its tough to keep them in good shape while bank fishing. Don't plan on doing that with this one except for one or two initial outings. But I will make 100% sure I dont hurt it lol.

Good luck with that. Stuff happens a lot while bank fishing.

Lou said it. Keep it covered :-)

My old original Lews TP is beat up it is matte. 3 or 4 years old now and is still smooth as ever.

I'll bet it balances great too.

Nice setup, should fish great.    I like reels with the flat black finish.   I might be wrong but thought that the Type R frame had holes in the nose piece.

Thanks! They sure are nice in flat black and they match any rod.
You aren't wrong. It was my mistake, the frame is that of the Tatula 100 which also has the solid aluminum and side plate. The guts and spool are Type R.

Rick, this is your next reel since you like the profile of them Tats.

Na I'm good. I'll stick to some of the cheaper ones.

I did use the Tactical quite a bit on Istokpoga and I really enjoyed the feel of the reel. Super smooth and, a great drag system, and excellent brakes. One thing I noticed is flipping I had no overruns or backlashes and I didn't have to thumb it much. It caused me no headaches at all during the trip. It is an absolute pleasure to use it. It also had a good amount of power when I hooked up with a possible hog that eventually got away and wrapped me up in some spatterdock stems. That was my fault I hadn't locked down my drag in an area I should have. She had my 765 flippin stick bent over pretty good as she was running for the pads.

I like my other reels. The PQ is out of rotation and is decommissioned. Everything else still good to go!

Lol... but no, this fish looked like a PB for Rick. Big SOB, sadly  it pulled a houdini in the pads.

Glad you are enjoying the reel Rick! Nothing like a good toy.
Btw, you mentioned your cheap baitcasters, what's cheap for you? $150? lol
