Finally had a chance to get out and go fishing (sac-a-lait) this morning . The river was extremely foggy and COLD . Air temps were about 37 degrees and the water temp was a steady 49 degrees. The white perch were suspended at 19 ft in 21 to 32 ft of water close to the jetties . 1/8 ounce brown and orange jigs were the ticket .We got there about 8:15 and left just before noon with a 3/4 bucket of slabs . It was a pretty good morning . Nice to be back on the water ...but I must admit that going 65 mph in 37 degree weather s-u-c-k-s!  :shocking:

Had a super day on the Red this morning.....Boated around 15 fish mostly in the 12.5-15 inch range.....

They ate up a chrome/blue rattletrap fishing the banks in Caspiano....They seem to be holding tight on old stumps and stickups off the bank...

Tried some other baits like spinners and jigs....They wanted the trap...so I obliged.. :)

Nice morning too before the wind hit..

Can't seem to stay away from the Red....Had another good day....Boated 7 good bass..all keepers and lost a couple more at the boat...

Then did a little White Perch fishing and caught 5 nice ones... I was fishing Caspiano area as usual.. :) and the perch were burried up in the bamboo on the back side of Caspy..lost a few trying to get them out of that mess...ha

Got back to the dock and started walking down the pier to get my truck and nearly walked right over a moccason sunning on the walkway... :shocking:
so keep an eye out as they may be getting more active in this warm weather..

RattlinScottie....what were you using for bait on those crappie?  jigs? shinners? both? how deep ? anything you can thorwn my way would be appreiciated think I might try them out this next week!  And to any others if yall have some info could you throw it my way this unuaslly warm temp. got me throwing the shot gun down and saying the heck with the ducks! TIME for FISHING~~~!!!!!!!

Todd

Hawgwild

TB44....I was just using shinners but would tip my hook with those little yellow Berkley crappie bites...

Others fishing there were using jigs...one was using a white plastic jig but not sure about the others.....They would work the jigs some but usually put a shinner on them...

I would straight line...I would find a hole in the bamboo and just let it drop to the bottom and crank up a foot or so...the fish did seem to be closer to the bottom in that area..Water debth varied form maby 10 - 14 feet....

Also...just out from the bamboo...maybe 20 feet or so.... there were several underwater stumps...can't see them but you can locate them on the debth finder.....myself and others caught several good perch there also...

If you are famaliar with the Caspiano area....motor on around the big bend and you will see the bamboo on your right...

BTW: Perch were a little slow today.....I didn't fish for them much til aroung 11:00 but another fisher there said he caught some earlier but had slowed down..

I'll probably be around there also...I'll either be alone or with my son in an older 17' Alumaweld with 70 Yamaha....mostly bass fishing on the opposite bank...

Say howdy and good luck..

Made a quick trip to the Red this morning...fished from daylight till 11:00...Boated 8 fish...7 keepers with largest near 3#.....water temp 53-54 degrees...

All fish came on 1/2 oz Rattletrap in Silver Shinner...it's one that has the  holographic finishe..

Nothing on spinners today but pretty much stayed with the trap...did get a couple of hits on tube but missed the hook set...so trying different type of hook..

TB44....folks still catching a few perch on the back side of Caspiano... fish in or close to the bamboo...Think there were 4 boats in the area this morning..

A friend had been going to Huksley Bay on T. Bend and doing pretty well with the perch...no details though...Said he caught 35 this morning..

I caught a pretty nice sized white bass off that bamboo point in Caspiana a few months ago.  Can be a pretty good spot.

b1jeremy

anyone been bassin on the red lately?  got a club tourny there soon and i am headed there to fish this saturday...just kinda trying to get a heads up on the bass situation and how the weather is treating them...thanx Jeremy

Hawgwild

Hello Jeremy....I've been hitting the red pretty regular through the holidays and catching some nice fish..

I'm mostly using chrome/blue rattletraps( 1/4 oz)  and 1/2 oz rattletraps in silver shiner...that's one of those holographic finishes

I'm also catching them on a spinner working as slow as possible...best color seems to be a terminator in sinver shiner...that's kind of a clear silver skirt..

Most of the fish I caught are just off the bank in 12 -14 ft. of water on wood..

Fish seem to be holding real tight on cover so make your cast as close as possible to visible stumps and bump them with your bait....or at least shave it real close....same with underwater wood structure..

On clear days...such as tomorrow...the bite seems to really slack off after the sun gets up on the water so you might try some jigs and tubes fished deeper in same areas..

Water temp last trip was 54 degrees...that may drop a little tonight but should come back up with the 70 degree weather tomorrow..

and I'll probably see you there too...ha

Fished the Red today from safe light till about 1400.  Managed to boat 15 with 9 of those being keepers.  Best five around 11lbs. The highlight of the day was catching a 5 lb 1oz largemouth.  My biggest one so far on the Red.  Now if I could just catch one like that during an ABA tournament might have a chance.  Caught all 15 on some brand of lipless crankbaits but most came on chrome black back and chrome blue back 1/4 rattle traps.  Although I did catch three on a rapala chrome black back lipless crankbait that has scales painted on the chrome with red on the lip(was bigger than 1/4oz but not sure of the weight) first thing in the morning.  Most of my quality fish were caught on the rocks but did catch a few around stumps and grass. Water temps were from 52-55 degrees.  I was quite surprised with the bite today considering the cold front that came through.

BHenke thanks for the update, we strive here to keep our reports as current as possible.  New members like yourself sure help us make this site grow and be informative to other members here on Ultimatebass.com.

As far as the cold front, its been my experience to try & be on the water right be for a major weather change, summer time thunder storms, winter cold fronts you name it.  That kinda stuff seams to trigger a feeding responce in bass as well as most wildlife.  I.E. most hunters will try and be in the stand just before a cold snap hits, get the deer moving.

Anyway thanks for the post, don't be a stranger.

Should you ever need any help around here just ask!  :)

Thanks for the info Brent....I fish the Red alot myself and some of the better bites come on a C/B rattletrap and lately on a blue Lake Fork craw tube..I'm fishing mostly around wood..

Kinda like you also...seems I catch good fish till tourny time then things seem to go south on me..  :'(

I'll probably be out there this weekend again..

Thanks for the report,
Scottie

Great report BHenke ~c~ Do you fish the red A lot ?
And have you had any luck on plastics or jigs?
papa

BHenke

Papa,

It is the only place I have fished since moving here in August and I fish it around twice a week.  Have not fished any of the local lakes because that low water really concerns me and no bass is worth me tearing up my boat.  Not to mention Clark's launch is only a 15 minute drive from the house.

Brent

BHenke

Forgot to mention,

No have not been catching too many on plastics or jigs. But usually I only throw them for an hour or less because lately the lipless crankbait has been good for me and they say to stick with your confidence bait so thats what I am doing. That biggest thing I have caught on plastics in the last two weeks was a 4 lb drum.  I had been catching a few on june bug baby brush hogs when I first moved here.

Brent

BIG PAPA

Thanks Brent!
Yes you are smart to wait to learn the local lakes, hopefully we will get some rain before the spawn. You will love several of the lakes around here, we have some good ones. You need to try Grand Bayou in March and It should not be that far for you.
