Who knows this one may be won with a small catch.

We had 6 boats and I won with 5.46lbs and had the big bass at 2.08,
Not saying it makes for a long day or anything. lo

Red Ranger

Fished the river today from 5:30 to 1:30.  Had a good day catching 25-30 fish.  Caught 10 fish over 12".  Biggest was 2'10.  All but a couple of fish were caught on brush hogs.  Majority of them were caught on watermelon blue, but several were caught on watermelon red - a couple on candy bug.  Fished grass lines in 9-10' of water working the baits along the edges.

Tried top water early and could not get a bite on horny frog, buzz bait, or pop'r.  Threw spinner bait and crank bait some, but only one spinner bait taker.

Excitement of the day was watching a fish chase my horny toad over a log.  The fish literally came out of the water and went over the log after the bait and nailed it.  I'm feeling and thinking hog and fought it to the boat.  Pretty disappointed when I got it to the boat and discovered I had a grindle.

Fished the same tournament with Red Ranger on Saturday.  Came in second place with 10 #'s (Red Ranger had over 11 #'s!).  Jay and I started above the lock and dam, but after no bites at 10:00 we decided to lock through.  We fished rocks that had some water flowing through.  I caught 2 small weigh fish on a watermelon worm. They were right on the rocks near the openings.  Jay caught 3 real nice ones on a crankbait, a Tiki-Stik, and a Rat-L-Trap.  All of his fish were 8-15 feet away from the rocks.  It was a surprisingly good day on the river; everyone caught fish, and had a decent bag to bring to the weigh-in.

Launched at Clark's on 6/24. Fished from sunup until 3 p.m., caught three keepers and several smaller bass. Had a couple throw the lures. No pattern, one here, one there. Horny Toad and buzzbait early, crankbait mid morning, worm in the afternoon. Water temp started at about 88 degree and rose to around 93. Fished in front of Clarks, Little Ninock, and then in the area of Dozer point. Lots of shad and bait fish everywhere, but no real/consistent schooling action on them. Not sure what seems to be the problem, probably too much food and way too hot.... ~sun. Will go looking elsewhere this week... ::)

MotherNature

Thanks for the report saber36 I hope that you find the fish that you are looking for. The river can be really tough at times. Let us know how you do next time...

Red Ranger

Trey, were you fishing riverside or bankside of the rocks?

Trey

I switched back and forth depending on which way the current was flowing.  I tried to stay on the down stream side of the rocks.

Fished from Clarks on July 1st. Not much success again... :'( Tried Caspiania, Cooly's, wing jetties in main river, Beehive. Talked to several other fisherman and they all reported about the same. Got off the river just before the storms hit  ~sweat. It was close and it got real rough real quick. Guess I will just have to keep trying. Sooner or later, gonna find them when they want to cooperate. ::)

Hey saber sorry to here about you last trip out there,,,,i havent been in a week or so, but i did tell my brother a spot to try out and he caught about 8 i think all were fairly small i think the biggest went about 1 1/2......all caught on cranks 2 different colors one was a shad white color and the other was a green tiger pattern with yellow and a touch of pink!  Hey told me he missed on a black blue lizard also!!!! Also the big revees tourny is out there this weekend i think so it will be intreting what it will take to win it!

Scott K.

Fished the river from 6:00 to 2:30. We were not in the Reeves tourney but I have a friend that was, so we decided to just fish and see how we "would" have done.

Early in the morning was the most productive for us. We quickly boated 5 right off the bat, the biggest being almost 4 pounds. They would destroy my ribbit frog but would never take the dern thing. My partner changed to a buzzbait and we started catching them.

After the morning bite was over we tied on a brush hog ( Red Bug) and my tube ( junebug). The brushog outproduced the tube about 7 bass to one. I eventually tied on the PB & J gatordawg and caught 3 towards the end of the day.

All in all, we had an excellent day. We caught fish all day long and weighed our best five at the end of the day. We ended up with 12 pounds which was probably in the top 10 in the reeves tourney. I just wish now we would have fished it. lo I think the winning weight when I left was 17.42.

Mike Cork

Scott thanks for the update, sounds like you had a really good day. If you don't mind were you north of Clark's or south :-\ What kind of cover were you fishing, grass or timber or rocks :-\

During the summer months I have always done better on the rocks but I wouldn't have thought to throw a ribbit on rocks, although it sounds like a good idea now. Anyway just curious ;)

We fished the rocks after the morning bite. We would just find an opening in the rocks and fish about 100 feet of it. We also caught a nice fish on the rock wall on the left side of the lock and dam 5. Caspiana jetties paid off for me. I am not very familiar with the names yet but we also caught fish North of Clarks where we could find openings in the jetties. There was an iron pole in the river with "209.5" written on it that we caught one about 3 pounds off of.

Early in the morning we caught all of our fish off the grass mats near the banks. We caught several near the mouth of McDade.

Slowly but surely I am building a little confidence in the river. That style fishing is a far cry different from the "beat the trees" mentality I'm used to.

Mike Cork

Thanks for the info, sounds like you are well on your way to unlocking the red river. Yep nothing like fishing a cypress tree lake, but you are catching some good fish WTG ~c~

Fished out of Clark's on Friday, 8 July, from dawn until 3:00 p.m. Still unable to put a pattern together, fished near Caspiana, main river levees, near bull dozer point, in front of Clarks, and other various areas. Caught small fish on buzzbaits and frogs early, crankbaits, brush hogs, finesse worms, later on. Water is cooler from rain last week, but still near 90. Will keep on working  ~sweat  because sooner or later, a pattern will develop...Haven't found any schooling activity in pool 5, which is strange since schooling is going on in other lakes at this time. Not sure what is different, unless it is the water temp, no current, and too much shad/bait fish.

Just messed around late this afternoon near Bishops Point and Dozer Pt, fished the grass and around rock points, nothing til very near dark...one on a natural color frog with a weight in about 4' and one on a chartruse crank bait in about 9'...how's that for a pattern? Both were unders (yes. I know there isn't a slot, but if there was, they would have been unders :))  The spinner bait did nothing....oh,well, it was better to be out there than not....

Fished the river early this morning. Tried buzz baits, ribbit frogs, and finally a baby torpedo. Once I tied the torpedo on, I got bites. Question..... What kind of hook set ups do everyone use for the ribbit frog? I am having trouble with the hook set on this bait.

We also explored a little. We went to the port lake. I've heard stories of these awesome lay downs that you can fish. There were some trees towards the end of the lake but there were posted signs up from a hunting club. Are these the lay downs everyone has told me about? I really didnt think much of that area although we did catch a few on crankbaits there.( Chartruese and baby bass colors)

We caught 7 bass from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Scott, check out this thread on RIBITS and HORNY TOADS

I think the are folks were trying to tell you about is in the back of Port Lake and then go threw the level into the flooded timber on the other side

The Stoner Ramp is probably about 20 miles...give or take a mile or two....from Clarks.

When will you be hitting the Red?

Hey everybody, just found this board and it is great! I just went to fish clarks this past weekend and it was a real wake up call. I can usually find fish on lakes but I fished all morning till 11am and only landed one small one on a white spinner I still had a great time but wanted to come back with my gf and show her a good time. After all a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work right? Anyway I figured I had better see what info I could find to get me going in the right direction. The area around Clarks looks great as I rode around but there were so many spots to choose from I thought this is gonna take years to figure out. But now after reading a few of these post I have somethings to try out and can save myself months of trial and error. It seems like people dont mind telling of secret spots on the river as much as they do lakes. I just wanted to say thanks for all the helpful info and I will try my best to keep you posted on my trips as well.
Now I have my map im off to try these spots.
Good luck all!!!!!

I caught you a delicious bass!
