our fishing has been a little limited since Mike got home, we haven't had a chance to get to the river yet. Mike said the only thing he has heard is to fish ridges with worms, and that a buzzbait has been working early and late in the day...

Good Luck,

The Red is one of my favorite locations to fish. There are an abundance of tournaments and a vast amount of areas that productivly produce fish. The Clark's have a great launch ramp and down home hospitality to go with it, and when it is too hot to fish there is a nice cold soda waiting for me in the store...

See ya on the water....

Buzz baits early and late, then work Texas rigged brush hogs in Kudzu on the ridges. Crank baits (as usual) are working again on the levees, but you must cover allot of water to get a few good fish.

Worked the river for just a little while yesterday evening.  I spent most of my time around the area of 12 Mile Bayou mouth by Harrah's throwing a crankbait.  Only caught a few small fish, which I expected in that area as hot as it was.  All fish came on a chartreuse/blue med diving Bandit.  I did take a long boat ride down to the Port Lake at about 8:15 pm, but when I got there the area was all muddied up because dredging was going on (across the river at the new cut).  I messed around there for just a few minutes & it was time to head back north where I launched.  Caught one slightly larger fish by the pads at the mouth of the Port Lake on a Pop-R.  Had to run, though because it was getting dark.  Absolutely no current on the river that I could detect.  I worked the rocks in a few places without much success. - Marty

Fished on the 20th from about 630 am to about 9:00 pm...my buddy caught one nice 5-6 lb bass near Clark's, caught a few other smaller fish mixed in there during the day.  Took the most of the fish on soft plastics and the bigger guy on a big white spinnerbait.  Most fish caught were on single stumps near a weedbed.
Spent the morning beneath the lock/dam...very unproductive.  Only took one small bass the entire morning.
Was anyone else out there?

Any good tips coming out of the river?  Still haven't found any hot spots worth speaking of.

Nah, all my buddies are too busy.  Almost went today, and probably will be going tomorrow.  Sat and Sun are locks!

But I REALLY want to go NOW.

The only advise I can give right now is that to learn some new water in the summer time the best thing to do is pick up a white crankbait and start casting. Hit as many rock levees as you can stand and then hit the trees and work that crank threw them tenderly to prevent hang ups. When you get bit spend some time in that area and find out why that fish was there......

Spent a few hours on the River this morning, without much luck - but full of excitement.

Took the advice of Steve and loaded up with White Pearl Crankbaits to work the rocks with.  Started out before sunlight between Clark's and Ninochs, and we caught a couple on Carolina rigged worms (around 7:30am) - nothing big, just a couple dinks (but fish just the same).

We were both anxious to hit the jetties, so we moved on North up the River to a couple of rocks/downed trees (look for the big red bouys! ;)).

Strapped on a Bandit 200 (8-10 foot runner) and nailed one on the first 2 casts - but both got away from me.  The first one put on a little show by the boat - and he was a nice little head.  Guessing around 3 lbs, easy.  No idea on the 2nd fish, only that he popped it lightly and ran....

Oh well....

Fished the Red on Sunday, 5 till 3:30.  Caught about twenty on various baits. Only seven good fish. Launched out of Clarks and caught my better fish out of pools 3 & 4. The better fish came out of the backs of the Oxbows where the water was reel clear and allot of grass.

Hooked up with a couple friends Tuesday afternoon to fish on the Red.  They picked me up at Clark's and we traveled down the river a bit and crossed over a rock jettie into some wooded water.  Pitched some buzz baits my brother made (white/chartruese skirt) and my buddy hooked a nice fish that got away.  Estimated around 4-5 pounds, but you never can tell - right?

We figured they would be biting a little better after/during the rains, but it didn't seem so.  But then again - it seems we didn't stick on one spot very long at all....

Going back with Brantley this afternoon.  Will let you know how we do, and what brings us luck (wishful thinking!).

Dave I plan on going to the river Sun. if I get my trolling motor fixed, I got the parts but the hole in the front where you have to put on the nuts and washers is too small for my fat hand, so I may have to go back with the rubber mounts and I doubt I find them on a SAT.I might go mon. also If  my Boss will let me off.haha 8)

Gabby

Hey papa,

If you are talking about the rubber mounting nuts that are fat on one end, and skinny with threads on the bottom, you can get them at Wal-Mart.  My brother & I just changed trolling motors on his old Skeeter, and they were easy to find, but hard to install.

If indeed these are what you are looking for, just go to the sporting section by the trolling motors.  You can't miss them as they come four to a package for around 13 bucks.

Remember, before you install - run the screw through the rubber stopper with an power screwdriver and pull the threaded end all the way up!  Otherwise the screw may not catch and you can have a hell of a time getting it together.

I may be telling you something that you already know, but maybe this info can help!

Papa,
I'm headed for the Red Sunday morning. If you don't get the trolling motor fixed, your welcome to hitch a ride with me.

J. R. what time and where ?

Gabby , thanks for the info I may have to go that way.

papa....

Some folks, including me, cut the skinny part of thse rubber mounting insulators off and just use the top part for the cushion effect and then use a nut & washer on the inside.  Seems to hold the motor down tighter.  Just a suggestion.  I knew I had seen those things somewhere in the last couple of days but couldn't remember where until Gabby mentioned it - Wal Mart!

Gabby

If you guys go to the river Sunday morning, look for me @ Clark's Marina.  I am planning on getting there around 6 am.

BIG PAPA

Marty that was my idea but I can't get to the holes there is not any room in there to put the nut on  the screw. my daughter inlaw did get her hands in to the two closest ones but not the back ones.

Hope everyone has a good and SAFE time on the river on sunday. Some of us have to work... Do me a favor and let me know how eveyone does and I promise to stay out of your spots papa. If anyone fishes the new lake across from the port lake let me know if the fish are still there. FYI I noted no current anywhere with the exception of wind current. I did see Homer with some clients on friday and I didn't see them catch anything outside of bill james lake on the wood line.. I hope you all do good............David

Just got back from fishing a windy Red River from sunup to about 11am.  Launched at Clark's and hit the rock jetties, which produced one dink.

Moved on to Caspiana, and my buddy grabbed one more dink on a Watermelon Seed Ole' Monster worm, and I nailed two with my home-made "Gabby's Red-Headed Stepchild" buzzbait (Pictured below - black skirt with red head & blade).  Caught them both in about 4 feet of water along the wooded banks.  The water where we were fishing was 10-13 feet deep.

Pictured is a nice 2-pounder of the 2 that I caught, and I found it interesting that this dude had battle scars: a completely split bottom lip.

Conditions got kinda tough at around 9:30 when we moved to the wooded area just south of Clarks before Dozer Point.  My buddy got one more dink on the same worm, but it was so windy that the fishing was tough - and we battled stumps half the time.

Coincidently, it was one of the best fishing trips I have had on the River - which is sad.  But as always, I had a great time!

gunter1309

fished the red sat out of coushatta, caught 2 early on a buzz bait then went 2 hours before next bite, caught one on a crank.  moved to my secondary spot and fished 3 hours without a bite, then caught 2 back to back on a black worm.  moved to jetties and caught 1 and missed one on a crank.  moved to my third spot and caught 3 on a crank one going just over 3lb, then got broke off on my secret crank, that sucked.  moved to another jetty and caught my last fish on a black worm and left at 4:30.  dodged t-storms all day and finally got wet on the way home.

Went back today to Clarks, got there about 1pm, in time to see papa, jr, and tim leaving with not very promising stories.  I fished 2 new spots and only caught one goo before getting ran off the river by one heck of a t-storm at 3, tried waiting it out in the marina ( good hot dogs by the way) finally left at 4.  Looks like I will be heading south for my next 3 tournaments.
