To all New Yorkers; Remember, October first all boaters are required to wear a PFD when on the water, goes through to April 30th.

Lip, it's because of the normal low temps, they don't like searching for dead bodies, too much work. Yes Mike, water temps can be in the low 40s or even the 30s, hypothermia can disable you in hurry.

Yes it can. Temps that cold can make it happen quickly. Muscle cramps, loss of breathe, and instant vision problems all compound it.

It's a real good law. I encourage my winter fishing mates to wear a PFD even on the ice unless it's super thick and the lake is small. They often write it off saying that a PFD will just make you die slower. For any on here interested in cold water safety familiarize yourself with the 1 10 1 rule. It will give you a strategy if you ever get into that pickle.

A PFD can mean the difference between being saved and being dead, take your pick.

Me and my fishing buddies wear the auto PFD the minute we step into my boat and until we step out of my boat. At 77 we can't swim with our clothes on :)

For any who have a self inflator system be sure to perform the necessary maintenance and replace the cartridges every once in a while to be sure they still work.  You don't want to find out when you hit the water that they don't work.  Recharge kits can save your life.
