I am thinking about taking the wife out there Sunday. I have never been on the Sabine.

Any chance I could get some help as to what to look for as to where to find the whites?
Where is the best place to launch?
How do I need to rig up to fish for them?

This is my first time going after whites, so I need a little info.
I don't expect anyone to give any secret holes,...just point me in the right direction...

What is the easiest, quickest way to get to Logansport from Shreveport? I-49 to 84 through Mansfield or go down through Keatchie?

We will be going Saturday to try to figure 'em out?

Oh yeah...Will I be alright in my 17ft ProGator this time of year or will I need a smaller boat?

BIG PAPA

Definately Keatchie, your boat should be fine

Bassaddict, Keatchie is the best way to go .The water is up high enough to run a ship through right now so bring your big boat..If you put in across the hwy 84 bridge on the Texas side ,when you get your boat launched go north ,there will be a HARD left hand turn (I would say about a mile up river )As soon as you make that turn there is a slough to your right go slightly past it to the edge of a tree line and drop your anchor ( the water is slack there ) You can throw your bait back  towards the slough or on the edge of the current .If you dont start busting them immediately .Reel your bait in very very slowly to trigger a bite .I have another spot I will tell you about by message ..  :-X

Doc, I was really hoping the magic tree would produce for you.Hopefully Bassaddict will kill them tomorrow .Good Luck

Well DARN IT :'(, I didn't get to go fishing today. I had too much stuff come up this morning to have time to go.

They are calling for 15-20 mph winds tomorrow, so I'll wait and see about going tomorrow. If the wind isn't too bad, I'll hookup & go!

Anyone make it to the water today????????

Chris

Bassaddict, Was hoping you killed em today ...I think Im going to go mid week. One day when the weather is a little nicer .If any of you boys can go during the week let me know and maybe we can hook up and see if we cant get into a gang of fish .. ;D

docwaldo

well, i cannot win!!  i went again this morning to the sabine and it RAINED, AGAIN.  i got htere around 545 and had the whole river to myself.  then about 800, every fisherman from mansfield to teneha came out in full force.  as did the game wardens.  but i managed to catch about 45 tiny catfish.  the kind taht will hurt ya if youi grab them wrong.  anyway--still not doing it like i was hoping.

drop it deep and yank it hard, and BE LEGAL!!

Im going to see if I cant break away Tuesday or wednesday morning and check my holes and the magic tree that may not be magic anymore since Doc didnt catch any there . Hopefully will have a good report for all of you white bass anglers . ;D

Chris

I was able to break away and go to Logansport today .Went to my favorite spot and didnt get a bite, went to my second favorite spot and caught roughly 15 white and yellow bass ,that was a little slow so I went to my third spot and finally found a concentration of fish .We ended up with  66 total .We fished about 4 hours .

Doc , I apologize for giving you sorry directions to my favorite spot .I realized today when I got to the spot that there were a hundred fallen trees around and there would have been no way for you to find the specific tree I was talking about .Im sure you called me an idiot more than a couple of times .Im going to mark the tree if you decide to go back and give it a try.I will let you know how I mark it after I go next time . It didnt produce today anyway (tons of trash on the bottom there).  ;D

chris,

I have fished out of the Logansport launch, and caught a slew of whites...  We used live crawfish, and it was FUN.  We were catching them every cast once we located them.  We must have caught 50-60 fish in a few hours.  One of the best times I have had on the water!

We went to the Sabine Refuge and fished the canals Thursday evening.  Caught 22 fish with 11 big enough to keep.  Watermelon seed flukes and trick worms were the most effective.  We caught most of the fish in the Central Canal.

I went and checked on the whites today in Logansport and lets just say the big uns aint here yet ,or at least they werent hungry  . There are plenty of yellow bass and catfish though . I threw a roadrunner and Rinky Dink with no luck at all. The whites we did catch were on shiners (all small)and were caught in the main river . The yellow bass and cats came on night crawlers. We caught roughly 40 to 50 fish in all . The kids had a good time so it was a good trip. THE RIVER IS LOW.

Ron Fogelson

Chris,  taking the kids out this weekend.  Did you guys launch & go up the river or down?  Should we fish the main river or the sloughs?  Any suggestions would be great.

We went up river .The river was a little low so we didnt fish any sloughs . There is a little current so we fished the main river .If you go north ,go past the big left turn in the river about 100 yards ,there will be a sandbar to your right (you will see a little campsite up in the slough)  ,anchor in about 10 to13 ft of water and cast out into the current. This is where the catfish were most concentrated ,there are yellows and a few whites there too. We took shiners and night crawlers and caught fish on both .The artificials werent working . I may go sometime this weekend with my two boys.I will be in a 20 foot ProGator (Silver and green) .If you see us stop by and say hello. Good luck

Thanks Chris,

I'm working on Danielle to go both Sat & Sunday so far she is saying to hold off for Sunday as it should be in the 70's and she is a wussy.  Anyway we will be in a Red/whit/black Nitro 929 hope to see you this weekend & visit while hooking some fish!

This message is to give you a heads up! I checked the Sabine this afternoon and it is very muddy .We tried the same spots as last weekend and caught one small yellow Bass. I went to check them because I was going to take some folks tomorrow and there is no way I would even go back there to fish for at least a week.

Ron Fogelson

Well Chris I should have followed you advice & put in here on home waters.  Had a good day, most of the time was spent on the drive down & back.  ;D  Ran up river to to 2nd hard left, fished the main river & moved in to that big old slough on the right side.  Two years ago we were killing them in there, but not today.  Moved back out to the main river heading back down river fished the right side & got 5 or 6 bites & only one little yellow for the effort.  moved on down to the first hard left from the launch & missed two on the left side & then just drifted the left bank until ti was time to go.  I managed two more with the biggest about 1.5lbs, nice white, & about a .5 lbs yellow, turned all 3 lose at the ramp.  Fished with crawlers, shiners, & crawfish tails.  Lots of bites on the tails, but got my 3 fish in the boat on the shiners, not even a nibble on the crawlers.

Learned to thread the shiners on the hook, put the hook in the mouth, out the gill without hooking it, then feed the hook out & turn it back into the shiner just behind the dorsal fin.  Tried hooking them through the eyes & through the tail but they kept getting stole, so by threading them on the hook I didn't miss but a few.

Currents up, waters stained, and sat right around 52&53 most all over, lots and lots of crap is floating down stream so everyone needs to be careful running.  Saw 2 big whole trees floating dead center of the river.

Play Nice or Die!

Has anyone been lately, or heard tails of the run starting yet?
