I've only seen a couple of dead Stripers on Claytor and attributed it to failed catch and release but, as it turns out the warm water is more to blame. Here's an article that ran in the Roanoke Times.

I covered quite a bit of the lake last SAT, didn't see a single dead fish.  Heard about the die-off before I went out so I was looking for them.  150-200 stripers for Claytor prob won't even move the needle.  They are thick as thieves in that little lake.  That said . . .

I don't know that I buy into the temp/oxygen theory just yet.  We've had a ton of rain in this area this summer.  There's been a ton of flow coming down the New River and thru Claytor.  There's also been a ton of run-off from farm land and yards.  I'm not so quick to give up on the potential for something manmade having caused this.  Thankfully it appears to be limited.  FYI - I did not mark a thermocline anywhere this past SAT.

that run off can at times increase the biological oxygen demand (BOD)... and drive an O2 sag... doesn't have to be 'chemical kill' stuff.

lots of possibilities here... including a 'localized' O2 sag... and some dead stripers.

The one's I saw were earlier in the July up near Covey's campground and that point with the shoal out from it. They're fished heavily in that area, that why I attributed it to anglers.
