You can quote me on the internet stating several times over the years that the Champion 704c is the best all around 3/8-1/2 spinnerbait rod on the market. I have had more joy with that rod in my hand than any other rod ever. I sold that rod to Lou during one of my tackle turnovers and he has stated that he thoroughly enjoys the rod as well. I plan on picking up another but before I do, has anybody handled both the 704 and the dx version of the rod?? I know the extra sensitivity isn't necessary but this might be worth it to have the ULTIMATE spinner bait rod.

I really liked the DX rods & like the new HP DX rods even more.  That said, I'd reserve the DX rods for contact techniques.  I prefer the Champion or Champion XP (same blank on both) for spinnerbait duty.  Reason being is that the DX & HP DX (even more so, IMO) are just a little faster in action.  I feel that fishing with the Champ/Champ XP lets the fish 'eat' the bait just a little better.  IMO, that results in more & better hookups.  In addition, I like the slightly longer 734 just a bit better.  If I was pitching or roll casting more, I'd probably favor the 704.

Keep in mind that plenty of folks like the DX models for spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, etc.  I just think that optimally, the Champ would be the better stick for the technique.

To be honest if you really liked the champion series and it balanced that well for your needs, you may find that the balance will be different with a lighter more sensitive rod. You'll definitely love the DX 704 but maybe not as much as you did the champion for spinnerbaits.

I've got to where I love a DX 743 for cranking, the extra sensitivity really helps pull a crank through a brush pile. That same principle may apply here.

I don't own a DX704 but my spinnerbait rod is the DX744, I tested a bunch of rods for spinnerbaits including the 704c but the DX744 just feels right. I throw mainly 1/2oz war eagle screaming eagles and occasionally jump up to 3/4 oz. The rod handles both effortlessly, and you can feel every thump and blade of grass.

hope this helps

I prefer the fury, savvy, or champ series for moving baits like spinnerbaits.  the DX are so sensitive it seems like i pull it away from fish before they really eat it.   That being said if you are able to avoid setting the hook  every time you feel the blade move the DX are very sensitive and could be an advantage in that way

Even though I'd love to see you buy a DX model. The Champ would be a better choice for spinnerbaits and save you some money as well. Now if it was a jig question I'd have a different answer.  Thx to all that answered here as well.

Funny, I stumbled across this thread from almost 7 years ago. I forgot about this conversation. I actually now have the DX 704c for a spinnerbait rod but have yet to cast it. Hopefully Gary was WRONG lol. I wonder if Lou is still using this rod.

I didn't buy that rod off you, I did by another rod from you however, and yes I'm still using that one. ;)

The newer model DX blanks are very "crisp". I wouldn't use one for spinnerbaits. Better off with a Champ HP..........................................edited: what the &^%$!, this post is 7 years old!

I think you'll be fine with either one. To me, the difference between the 2 isn't all that much.
