I carry a heavy duty 12v compressor in the truck and used to air down / fill up a lot, both with 2WD and 4WD trucks.

I live by the motto that 4WD doesn't mean you won't get stuck, it means you get stuck in more expensive places.   ;)

But low air pressure in the rear tires while on the road and trailering results in excessive heat in tires, and can cause a blow out. Look what happened back in the day with the Ford Explorer/Firestone debacle. They say it was the tires, but when the sticker on the truck said 29psi in tires, well....

Agree on the wear, portable pumps are real cheap now and very small!  Yea, that was a Ford deal all the way but Firestone couldn't fight it because they agreed to the poundage, bad bad move.

I have a 2 wheel drive, 2.9 4 banger Colorado and don't have a problem at the ramps I use, nor do I have a hard time in snow, just don't be in a hurry.

it IS fun.  driving on old dirt/sand roads is too... especially when you have a limited slip differential..
boy the memories ... 

know I'm goin' to heck, but the best place for cuttin' kitties when I was  younger was the church parking lot...

 small bag of sand can solve a lot of problems without having to let air out then refilling.

When I have poor grip i can usually hold the brakes a little to get started without spinning.
