I thought I'd start this here and maybe move it to the boating safety board later. If you know of a boating accident that occurs this holiday weekend, post the details here.

At this time we have a missing boater in Greenbriar County. The details haven't been released yet but it looks like it will become a recovery effort. I also saw a report from Smith Mountain Lake that a boat running lastnight ran aground while avoiding a head-on collision.

Not off of a boat, but three people were swept into the Gulf by a rip near Rollover Pass, a guy went after them to help them out.

The three that were originally washed out were rescued by boaters.  The Coast Guard was going to search through the night for the good samaritan.

Haven't heard anything else on it yet.

Update:

Family members alerted the Coast Guard around 8 a.m. Monday that the body of Stephen Espedal, 37, was located in the water by the shore near where he went missing this weekend.

May 28th, Big Moose Lake, NY. Timothy J. Dunn a 61 year old man was operating a 14 foot aluminum Gamefisher boat at night without lights when his boat was struck by a 15 foot aluminum Starcraft boat being operated by Jay D. Burrows, age 19.
Burrows checked to see if anyone on the other boat was hurt and realized Dunn had been thrown overboard, state police said.

Rescuers responded, but were not able to find Dunn. State police divers found Dunn's body Saturday morning near where the accident occurred.

State police said there were no signs of alcohol use or foul play, and that the incident is believed to be accidental. Troopers are continuing to investigate.

Has several spots with depths over 135 ft, one of the divers last week said the water temps down there was 40 degrees surface temps 92 and all kinds of stuff under water.
There is nothing like time on the water.

In high school two of my friends were fishing on a Saturday afternoon on a hot summer day. One boy decided to jump in the lake to cool off and he never surfaced. The authorities found his body the next day. I have wondered all these years what could have happened. It was a large clear lake. Did he severely cramp up? Did he go deep and pass out from the shock of cold water? Did he get tangled in underwater vegetation? RIP Sammy.
Another high school friend had a dad who made a crude boat and used it to fish many times. The dad had only one arm and one leg due to an electrocution from a power line. Some how he fell out of the boat and drowned. I never understood why a person with such a handicap would not wear a PFD. RIP Mr. Day.
