Here's some of the lead jigs & other lures I had poured & posted in another thread. They're all done with powder paint. I used brown, black, white & green pumpkin.

The green pumpkin color, looks to have tiny white specks in it. It's a metallic, but doesn't show any sparkle real well. The metallic sparkle is not very good as it is, so doesn't show well in the pics. The other colors are basic.

I have various other colors too, yellow chartreuse, blue, red, orange and a dark brown but haven't played with them yet.  :)

Jim, amazing work as always. Can you paint over that powder coat to customize it? And, if you are tying hair and or feather I would imagine you install the weed guard after you tie? Thanks. J.

bigjim5589

Thanks John! Those that I intend to tie something on will get the weed guards epoxied in place afterwards. The rest will get epoxied in place before a skirt or plastic bait is put on them.  :)

I try to do things in steps, but right now am also doing some experimenting, tinkering & testing things out.  ;)

I have ideas in my head too, but can only do so much at one time so it's all a work in progress.  :-*

Of course the kid in me is also day dreaming of fish being caught on them too!   ~gf

You do great work Jim and i asked since i want to get a bunch of them and tie them but i was wondering how it works with the weed guard. I have never used a weed guard on a jig. Its a very interesting option for me now. Can i highlight that powdercoat with laquer basd paint or would i leave it as is.  Thanks again for your help here. John.

Nice work Jim. John, I think he'll sell the jigs with the weedguards and you put them in after you're done tying.

Heck that would be a lot easier!!! Lol!! Whew!

bigjim5589

John if you want some of them let me know. As Rodney said, I can send them with the weed guards left out so you can epoxy them in after you get your tying done.

I don't use the jigs with weed guards for all purposes. Sometimes it's just not needed. But in places where it is, it's nice to have them.

I've trimmed them down a few times too so that there wasn't as many strands of the fiber.

I've got some other molds that take a smaller weed guard, mostly small round head jigs, and have improvised by epoxying a part of a weed guard, like 6 strands into the head.Do It has some molds that take a "Y" type weed guard too, which can be useful on some jig types.

All depends on what is needed or may work the best.   :)

Jim, how do you handle the weedguards in the ballhead jigs, I had some made out of drill rod at the last place I worked, they work great.

I think the larger weed guard will work well here. The weed cover is pretty heavy with lots of grass. That will work well here. This is a new technique to me. Im escited to try it. Im sure walleye and pike will hit them as well.

Rodney, I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, but I do have some ball/round head molds that take the fiber or "Y" weed guards. Some of my molds have been modified to for wire weed guards too.

I prefer not to use small jigs, like for panfish, that have any type of weed guard if I can still fish without losing everyone I cast. And, try to go as light as possible when I do add the weed guards as I go smaller with the hooks. IMO, when getting small with the jigs, sometimes those weed guards become fish guards too, particularly when they're biting real light.

A few months ago I made some 1/8 oz. round head jigs on size 1 black nickel hooks with wire weed guards for a friend in VA who wanted to tie small hair jigs for stream SM bass. I used single strand stainless wire in .014" diameter. He told me they worked fine, but they were more of a rock guard.

I also sent him a couple with a finer wire, which he indicated was too light. Of course, it's only his opinion for his purpose. Someone else may like that finer wire on such a small size jig.

I found out a long time ago, that no matter how a jig is made, some folks will like them, while others won't. That's one reason I started making my own lures, so I could make them exactly the way I wanted them or needed them.

John, I've yet to find any "perfect" weed/snag guard that I've used. None protects the hook & keeps it from getting snagged 100% of the time. If they did, they would likely keep them from hooking the fish too. Some types are certainly better than others, and a lot depends on where & how the jig is used. Another reason I got into making them, I got tired of losing jigs because I was using jigs either with no weed guard, or they had the wrong style for the places I was fishing. I figure if a weed guard reduces my lure losses by even half, I'm doing better than I was years ago when it seemed I lost every jig I tried to use.  lo

I'm willing to work with you, and send you some different things to see what might work best for you up north.  :)

Jim i see that jig put under the pads and kept down there as best as possible . Jerking the line through the pads to free it should give just enough up and down to create a ruckus and displace sediment. Its a finesse presentation for sure and i can see that it will work. Some of those profiles will also work vertically for pickerel dropping through ledges and even trolling. The fellas up here are not used to this. They are all crank and frog guys. This presentation could light it up some days.

Fabulous work.  And a tremendous assortment of head styles.  Was especially thrilled to see the glider/slider heads.  We'll hafta talk about those a lil bit.

Hard to beat the round or bughead style for versatility.  That's my personal fav.
