Good luck with that rod. The nice thing is a 7' mh will also be a great rod for so many other applications.

That should help you out a lot.  The extra length plus it being a medium heavy will make a big difference.  Did you get the combo??

No, since I already had a BlackMax reel with line on it, I just got the rod. If the reel starts to limit me on this rod, I'll get another but I wanted to give it a shot first

Well the good thing is hollow body frogs are heavy and just about any reel can toss them a good ways.

I lucked out, Walmart had a 7ft medium heavy Abu Garcia rod I stock. I actually grabbed the last 7ft they had, the rest were 6'6 rods. Thanks for the input and advice guys. I'll definitely be putting it all to the test here soon

Good choice, I own an Abu Garcia Vigilante 7'0" MH, works great!

I fish for Black bass as abank fisherman on the San Joaquin Delta River.

I fish frogs in the Glades and Okeechobee I use the dobyns fury 735 50lb suffix with a revo rocket 9:1 sometimes you cannot move them frogs and speedworms fast enough. Sometimes you have to slow down with this reel you can do both.

As soon as I get a blow up I reel up and as soon as I feel weight I set the hook. Yes you need braid and a 7 foot plus rod with both action and backbone.

Rod - in open water I think the recommendations to use a 7' MH/fast are sound.  Over grass or in pads I'd go with a H/fast.

Line - 50 or 65# braid is not overkill.  In fact it's essential if fishing a frog over heavy grass or cover.  There are some places where I use 80# braid.

Hooksets - one of the things I struggled with when I first started fishing frogs was the hookset.  I'd react ~immediately to every blow-up I had.  I needed to remember a lesson from my zaraspook and popper days - feel the weight.  As you're reeling down be sure to check for the weight of the fish on the end.  Then bury the hook.  We're talking about a second here.  That second made a huge diff in hook-up ratio for me.

Frogs- ish's phat frog or RI swamp donkey. On a stricter budget pad crashers are it.

Line-50-65 braid

Rod- Stought with enough tip to launch the frog

Reel- 6-7 gear is fine. Lower gear is better for winching but compromise slack pick up and the abilty to really get the fish to the boat fast

Techni- Let the fish get a good hold of the frog. They are also know to tail slap and hit with the body so dont get discouraged by some missed hooksets. Def a pattern based action I found. If you have a day of alot of missed hooksets, start follwing up with a worm immediatly after the strike.
Get the fish to the boat or get the boat to the fish. Either way do it ASAP other wise fish will use reeds and foil, drilla, whatever to gain leverage and be freed.

No matter what you will have fun. One of the funnest ways to fish is a horney toad but it doubles as one of the most frustrating due to the bait needing alot of attention to swim straight and right side up. But when they hit that HT, good god
