I read about this in the Tip Voting contest, and had never heard this before. I had a large fish swallow a jig deep last year, and the jig was hard to get out. The fish bleed a lot; which bother me; so this tip stuck in my head. I stopped to gas the boat on the way to the lake yesterday, and went in store and bought a Sprite to keep in the boat; just in case. Sure enough; I had a fish swallow a crank bait deep. Took a little while to get that hook out; so there was some bleeding. I pulled out the Sprite; gave the fish a drink; and sure enough the bleeding stopped. So; thanks for the tip; I felt a lot better.

Sprite, Coke, Mtn Dew - not sure what it is about carbonated rinks that does it but it sure is effective.  I keep a couple of Cokes on board just for this reason.

Is this for real? I've never heard about this.
2004 Ranger Camache, Yamaha 150. Guess who thinks he's pretty cool now?

very real.  something in carbonated drinks is the perfect coagulant for fish gills.

Mr. Hobbes, thanks for sharing the use of a tip from the contest.

It works and for those with questions of the 'why' it works be sure read the whole thread.
You all know I'm a 'why' guy and I actually researched the whys very throughly.

For ease of access here it is again.

Be sure to read my third post in the thread!!!

I have to remember to throw a soda in the boat.

I wonder if beer would work? If not, at least they got a little buzz before they met their fate!
TTK has spoken.

I've seen them put in a livewell at like 10 in the morning and make it to weigh in and then released....seemed active and healthy.

When done at boat side....you at times will have to pour in soda more than once....like in the video....before the bleeding stops.

LunkersTV is a member here too.
He was kind enough to allow me to use his video.
Video, they pour and dunk 3 times before bleeding stops.
In reality YOU DON'T RELEASE back to water till you see the bleeding stop.

Pour soda, dunk fish in lake, pull it out and see if it stopped bleeding.
If not, pour more soda, dunk, check and repeat till you see the bleeding stop.
