Quick Video of technique mentioned.  May want to watch First!

A few 'learned ideas about above video.
At point :54 line your thumb up at the spot the snag is on your spool when you start...helps when pressure is right over the 'lash' point.
At point :58...when he does the first spool turn and especially at point 1:26 when 'lash' doesn't immediately release...instead of just making a half turn do a full spool turn or two of reel/spool before winding again...at times this helps because loops in 'lash' are large.

And to answer, 'Does it work on Braid' question.
First off, it works on ALL lines.
But Braid can every now and then can cause unique 'EXTREME' backlash challenges by the nature of it's properties.
Especially if you like many of us don't use reel brakes much.

Couple notes on above video.
At 1:59 when he speaks of putting pressure on...although he's not using his 'thumb' he's doing the 'thumb trick' with his index finger.
Also in original link (1), Ron Fogelson gives some GREAT advice about working with braid!  ~c~

I've used this for a LONG TIME!
I'm a Northern Boy, we grew up on Spinning gear so when switching to Baitcasters...I Backlashed more often than having successful results.  lo

I still get at least ONE backlash per outing...why...because I LOVE LONG CASTING so I use little to no breaking and my thumbing will NEVER BE AS GOOD AS YOU SOUTHERN ANGLERS.
AND I'M AN EXTREME PUTZ BY NATURE !!!!!!!  ::) lo

And to top it off, I do 'workshops' teaching Bassing to kids a couple of times a year.
There is always a couple a kids who see fishing shows and they ask about baitcasters because the PROs only use baitcasters.
So out comes my baitcasting rods from the car and trust me...THEY ALL LEARN THE 'THUMB TRICK' real quick.  ~roflmao ~roflmao

So in ending, even the best of baitcasters get backlashes!
There always is going to be times your flipping/casting under or to something and the bait/lure hits a piling or the back of the boat or the pier your fishing from or the dreaded tree right behind you when your shorebusting and the lure/bait comes to an instant halt but the SPOOL DOESN'T.  ;) lo
So if your new to baitcasting or are reluctant due to the hassles of removing backlashes....
USE YOUR THUMB......... AND Be Gone, You. The Dreaded Backlash!

Going to resurrect this, because I did the same.  Found an article somewhere that gave the tip, can't remember where though.  Anyway...

Here is the tip...if you normally cast 100 feet with your BC, go someplace where you can spool out 110 feet of line.  Take a piece of electrical tape and place it on the spool.  Tape doesn't mess with the reel and the line should respool right over it.  The tape keeps the backlash from going any deeper than it.

I just started with BCs again the beginning of this year, and spooled them with braid, just like my spinning reels.  Man was that a bonehead idea for starting out.  And I had some real doozies for backlashes, but once I started putting the tape on they weren't as bad and my confidence started to grow.  Now no tape and no problems!
