I will post the same thing I did in the Welcome forum and here it is

***I was in a bombing in the midde east and after a few years of hospital stays my mental health Dr. said I needed a hobby for my depression.

So I started wood turning and enjoy it a lot.  I used to love hunting and fishing a lot and resigned my self to not being able to do it anymore since I was in a wheel chair for 5 years after being confined to bed for a year in a body cast.

I have been turning now since mid 2010 and the last few years I have been teaching other disabled vets like me how to turn also.

So now to why I am here.  I have relatives who live in Minnesota and Wisconsin and a few asked me to make lures for them.  I have NO idea where to start or where to buy parts or wood needed.  So any and all help is much needed.  Also I was giving his link at WoodNet.net and with my brain damage if you could help me with links that would really help to.***

I am not a smart guy anymore with my brain damage and I ask a lot of questions and need to be shown a lot and helped with pictures and YouTube or DVDs.

So I want to thank you in advance to any and all help you can offer.

O and PS  Are Links allowed here?  If so that would help a ton

Ok here's a starting point.

There's a lot of you tube videos you can check out too.

Thank you and I will be down loading them to my computer so I can show the vets too.

Also do you know where there maybe some free templates to different kids of lures?  I tried google but none shown up.

Welcome to the site Arlin and thank you for your sacrifice, we are in your debt. As far as templates go you could make full size copies of pics of a bait. Jann's Netcraft sell lure bodies you use to make baits. Another good source for knowledge is the site Tackleunderground, they'll help you out. Post what you make and what you did, there'll be folks here interested in what you are doing.

I can't say I've ever come across templates before?

I know there are a couple of tackle making companies that sell blank bodies. Jan's Net Craft is a big one.

spend some time on this site digging around. Lots of videos as well

I used old baits as templates. Trial and error is really going to be the best way to go about it honestly. You most likely won't find many (if any at all) templates online.

Your best bet is to make a tracing jig for your lathe, install a profile you want to reproduce, be it either one you came up with or one from a store bought lure that looks like it can be duplicated on a lathe.  Trace it to a pattern board, and use that board to reproduce the profile as many times as you want on your lathe with a duplicator.

Here are some plans

This is one of the duplicators that are around, and you might even find plans somewhere to build one yourself.

For some reason, templates for fishing lures are hard to come by no matter what medium you are using.

Thanks a lot guys.

When I do get some made I will send them our to some of you to be tried out and give me feed back on them.  Do you guys that that is possible?

I have not fished since before being in the bombing and unless I go in a pontoon I never will again.  So I can help others do what I loved to do.

Hi Arlin, welcome to the site, and thank you for your service!

I agree with a few of the guys here you could purchase some plastic blanks and perhaps mimic them.
I have purchased blanks from a few places to paint. Perhaps these can help. I don't think any of our sponsors sell blanks, if they did surely Mike Cork would have mentioned them.

This one is here in the US and they are excellent quality. They also tend to mimic baits that are sold in stores.

This one sells blanks cheap and are Chinese made. They take longer to get to you but the price is right.

Buying a blank for a template will save you money instead of paying say 5-10 dollars for 1 lure in the store you can get a blank for 1-3 dollars.

As far as wood work, I can't help much in that department.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for the links.  I am thinking of getting one or two plastic lures that I can afford and use those as templates and when I get more funds buy more.  I also have started teaching other disabled vets how to turn wood and use hand tools.  If I have any extra money it is to buy pen kits which I give to them to make a pen.
Pretty fun and I want to use this as a teaching aid so they can make some lures also.

When I was fishing I did not know of any plastic or rubber lures so this is new to me.  I grew up in the Mountains of Colorado used to do a lot of Fly fishing and when my Dad taken us to visit relatives in Minnesota and Wisconsin we did a lot of fishing on the Great Lakes and Walleye fishing too.  All I can say is I really miss it.

Arlin, welcome to the site! You've gotten some excellent advice. I'm not trying to steer you away, but check out the lure making forum on stripersonline.com. There's some folks there who are very good at making wood lures & lots of tips & info related to wooden lures. Plus other lure types as well. Much of what's there is for "surf" lures used in saltwater since that site is more about saltwater fishing & specifically Striped bass, but a lot of the information can be applied to any type of wooden lure making.

While you're there check out the thread, "Solar's homemade lure corner". That guy is in Finland & is like the Rembrant of wood lure makers & I think you'll enjoy seeing what he does. His talent is amazing. He also has some tutorials on the internet that may help you.

Once you've checked out the information that's been recommended, please check back with us here on UB and show us any lures you make. Doesn't matter if they're finished lures or simply as you progress with making them. There's quite a few folks here who would enjoy seeing them & many who might be interested in how it's done.  :-*

Welcome to the site Arlin.  Another idea for something to make would be those fancy little ice fishing poles.  I bet you could turn some very decorative handles for them.  Check MudHole.com for the blanks.  I have never been an Ice fisherman, but I bet there are guys on here that are.  Those fancy little rigs would go over great up in the North lands.

Also, thank you for your service and sacrifice.

Thank you and I will look at the site.  I will not join because being on to many sites confuses me so I will stay here and look at others.

That is a neat idea.  My brother in law still has an ice shack and he and my dad go ice fishing a lot along with my other brothers and nephews to.

I just check the site and to me anyway everything is kind of expensive for any of the ice poles or anything else there.  Maybe sometime I will get a Christmas gift certificate
