I take a empty toilet paper roll and slip it over the chuck of my cordless drill. I leave the old line running through the guides and tie the end around the toilet paper roll. Prop the rod so it'll stand up and  released the trigger on the reel then start running your drill. The line will strip off very easy and very quickly. When your reel is empty slide the TP roll off the drill chuck and discard it.

That is a fantastic idea.  I use TP rolls for a lot of line maintenance stuff.  Going to try this one next time, thanks.

Excellent idea. I might start storing my heavy braid that way.

Great idea!  ~c~ Up until now I have been using a bolt through an old empty line spool with the drill. Going to try this nest spring when I respool.

That's a great tip I read somewhere years ago. Been using it ever since. Quickest way to remove line from a reel. Thanks for sharing.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but reading the replies makes me wonder just how many of you strip all the line off the reel or just a little more than a cast off.  I only strip a little over a cast off and leave the rest on.  This saves me line and time.  I tie the new line on with a uni-knot and never have a problem.

I got a little gadget that fits in a drill at Gander. It's shaped like 2 cones, small ends together and they unscrew from each other, Slip the line in between halves, tighten and turn on the drill. Then just unscrew the halves and drop the line in the trash. Less than $5 and works really well.

Well i typically cut the line off as needed, but when i can no.longer cast a decent distance, i remove all the line and put on new line. Or where you talking about something else entirely?

i also change the whole spool......on a side note - and certainly not knocking the practice, i find it a little funny how much money we spend on gear, lures , boats , tournaments , etc , etc, but i always see guys talk about line backing to save money  ~shade lo

The line may not have wear from being fished but it does have UV damage throughout the whole spool.  I get that line gets expensive but as a weekend warrior I don't have a problem spending the money every season to respool.

Does that still apply to braid?

Wish I had re-spooled before yesterday.  Lost about a 10-pounder at the boat when the 40-lb test braid snapped.
Broke it again about an hour later on a hookset.  That was all for that rig.  Line has now been replaced!

How old was the line? Brand?

I must admit that it had been on there probably three years!  Power Pro.  It's good line, just past due for a change.
I will tell you what IS NOT good line though--Spider Wire Stealth Glow-Vis.  I broke it so many times that I just threw an unopened box in the trash.  I bought three boxes of it last fall.  Love the way it looks and throws but it breaks too easily.  I had 40 pound on two rigs and it just snaps without a lot of provocation, sort of like my first ex-wife.
I'm back to Power Pro!  Although I picked up a spool of Academy braid, H2O Express.  It seems to be doing just fine so far.  Don't know how it will hold up over time though.
I also have a spool of that new Power Pro MaxQuatro line.  Haven't tried it yet, but will next week.

That's interesting Don because I have the exact opposite situation. I have tried Power Pro in different pound tests several times over the years and it always broke on me. I now use Spiderwire exclusively, and have been for a longtime in 30 - 65 pound test and have never had it break. In fact, the Glo- Vis is what I use 99 % of the time so my old  eyes can see line movement. I believe Bo also uses this line with good success.

I think you have just been eating too many Wheaties and your hookset is now superhuman.  ~bb  lo

Well, perhaps I got a bad batch or something.  But I have witnesses that saw that stuff break for literally no reason, not a hard hook set, just a steady pull.  I've been fishing 60+ years and haven't had my line broken this many times since the days of 6 pound mono!
I am glad to hear it's working right for you.  Maybe I'll try one more spool.  I like the way it looks.
There sure are a lot of folks that will disagree with you about PowerPro though!  :)  I use the Yellow most of the time because, like you, I need to see that line better.

I know folks will disagree about the Power Pro. And to be truthful I am sure judging by the number of people just on this forum alone who use it that it really is a good line, so I don't want to sound like I am putting it down. Like you, I just may have gotten a few bad spools.

In the end we all use what we feel comfortable with and that's what's great about fishing. Different strokes for different folks.  8)
