What would you guys recommend for daiwa reels? I have a new zillion BC and a new exceler UL spinning reel. Wondering what oil and grease you recommend? Also, is there a degreaser I can spray the reels down with to degrease the bearings and gears to apply new oil and grease at the end of the season?

Just a mixture of Simple Green or the like with water to scrub the parts. Take the bearings and soak them in lighter fluid or acetone till you get all the old oil out (you will see the acetone stay clean). Dump the dirty acetone after each 5 minutes of swirling until it stays clean. Oil on the bearings, and grease on the moving parts. I use Ardents kit as well.

Ardent makes a good oil and grease? I've got some reel butter from a buddy of mine but it seems kind of thick and old. I've used hot sauce before but would like something quality that will hold up well.

LgMouthGambler

It was probably thick and old because it was just that. Get yourself some fresh oil and grease and store it right. The kit comes with a case, so just slide that I a drawer in the house. I use it and I am all Daiwa and Shimano.

If I get the ardent lube kit with the oil, grease and bearing lube and buy the professional cleaning kit with the dip container, would that be good or should I just buy the kit with the reel kleen spray? How well does it dissolve grease and flush oil?

LgMouthGambler

I honestly don't use the spray. I use Purple Power from Advance Auto.
The kit also comes with a brush, swabs, and a screwdriver. You can get everything yourself too. The bearing oil is very thin, and doesn't last long. I use one drop of the regular oil on my bearings. I can still cast far enough with my tune so I don't worry about it being thicker for the bearings.

Has anyone heard of liberty oil?

Pro Reel

For maintenance on a new reel, use the stock oil. Don't switch brands of oil and grease until you do a full service to clean off the old lube and flush the bearings. Once you do a full service, their are several good oils and greases. I prefer TSI 321 for oil. I also use TSI 301 for spool bearings. It's a solvent based evaporative version of the 321. With TSI 301 I just dip the clean bearings in the can and then let them dry. The bearings will be completely lubed and coated with corrosion protection, they will spin super fast also. For grease, I prefer super lube brand with Teflon. You can buy it at some hardware stores or online in 3oz tubes for $7.

Pro Reel

You don't need to buy a reel cleaning kit. All you need is a few good screwdrivers, some brushes, an old cake pan or tub, some simple green or other safe type cleaner for most parts, a can of brake clean for flushing bearings, some camp stove fuel or lighter fluid for soaking bearings before flushing with brake clean spray and for soaking stubborn metal parts.

I do have simple green here, a snap on box full of tools I barely use anymore, a few containers and old tooth brushes. I've cleaned my fair share of BC and spinning reels, but mostly for others with their lubes. I've sold off most of my reels before they needed maintenance. My one shimano chronarch I did with hot sauce as I did with my quantum accurist. And any spinning reels I've had were on the cheaper side so I just used oil and grease from around the house. So if I just get lubes, what's the overall best oil for bearings and grease? I grease the gears and oil the worm gear and my bearings of course, but if there's one good lube for bearings I'll grease the worm gear as I've done in the past. I don't want to be buying 3 different lubes when two will do fine.

I use super lube on gears, to include the worm gear. I'm still using yellow label Rocket Fuel for my oil.

After much trial and error, I think super lube is probably the best grease there is for reels. As for oil, none of us will ever agree, because there are so many good ones. I used tg's rocket fuel for years and still do for many applications. It's one of the top reel oil brands. It comes in several different viscosities and you can blend any of them together to get whatever viscosity you want. After hearing about TSI products from several friends on a reel repair forum, I tried it a few years ago and have switched to only using TSI for bearings. Tsi 301 makes bearings spin super easy, and unlike regular oils, it doesn't need refreshed frequently. One application of TSI can last for over a year even in harsh use. The synthetic oil that's left behind after the solvent carrier evaporates bonds to metal on a molecular level and has better corrosion resistance than any other lube I know of. It's not cheap however, an 8 oz can will run about $30 something with shipping. It will last most people a lifetime though as one can will do hundreds of bearings. I simply take a completely clean and dry bearing and hang it on a wire then dip it and shake it in the can, shake off the excess and then lay it on a paper towel until it's dry.

madmantrapper

I use lubriplate for grease and gun oil for oil.

Well, after two months of fishing the reel it started making noise today. Opened up the reel to no grease. Beautiful. Daiwa grease either sucks or they didn't grease it much. The only grease I found was in the drag star and in the spool tension knob. Other than that, nothing. And they over saturated the bearing in the side cap (where the weights are) it was sopping wet with oil. So I degreaser the whole reel and flushed the bearings. Used the hot sauce that was here, which I've used in my quantum accurist pt and my shimano chronarch previously. Hopefully it holds up for a season or two. I have to say te ardent reel cleaner spray worked very well for degreasing. I used acetone for the bearings. Seems fine now.

That's odd, most manufacturers over due the grease too. Thought process is that the average angler is hard on equipment and won't grease or maintain the reel so extra grease will get them past the warranty period....

Same with tool manufacturers. That was my first thought when I saw no grease as well. Literally no grease. It was quite wet in there though. I've had good luck with the hot sauce so hopefully it sticks.

LgMouthGambler

Daiwas (Japan made), dont come with a whole bunch of grease like other manufacturers do. In fact, Shimanos that are JDM dont either.

SuzukiGS750EZ

Well, all seems to be well. Does anybody know of the carbonated drag is an upgrade from the one in there?

LgMouthGambler

Not really, the Zillion has a pretty good drag right out of the box.

Basically what happens here! Although I was catching much larger fish in the upper 40's compared to the upper 70's here lately.
