I am looking at the 684CB or 685CB for jerkbaits and square bills. Tight quarters short range work. Do any of ya have experience with either one?

Because you'll be doing jerkbaits work with it also I'd go with the 684. That said if you'll be doing a lot of jerkbaits work around laydowns or cedar bushes (any kind of wood really) I might move up to the 5 power.

Both are great rods. The 4 power will load up more for longer casts, but since you said short work, that lends to the 5 power.

For me it depends on cover I'll be fishing them.

It really depends on which you're going to be fishing more (jerkbaits or squarebills).

The 684CB is a better jerkbait rod.  The 685CB is pretty stout - it is actually stiffer than the 705CB.  To put it another way, the tip of the rod is a little stiffer than the 705CB.  I had a tendency of overworking the jerkbaits using it - more so than the using the 705CB.  Using the 684CB for squarebills, I like to keep them to 1/2oz or less.  It will cast & retrieve bigger/heavier just fine but I think it starts working pretty hard.

The 685CB is going to be money with 3/8oz-3/4oz squarebills - especially the 1/2oz - 3/4oz baits.

I have only thrown a jerkbait for a short while on the 684 but the time I did throw it, I was highly impressed and have no qualms about using it in the future.  I mostly threw small squarebills on the 684 when I had it out and my oh my what a rod for that.  I could fling the small squarebills a long ways and the 3/8 ounce ones a country mile.  Across the width of a small shallow stump filled cove no problem whatsoever.   I have also thrown small lipless cranks and pop-R's on it.

The thing that I first thought was "wow this thing is weak for a 4 power" because it is so light.  I was very wrong. It does an awesome job.  I just didnt think Dobyns made anything that small but needless to say I will be throwing a lot of flukes, jerkbaits etc this spring with it.
