Lookie What I Caught!

There are many species to catch when salt water fishing.  Just kind of need help identifying this one though. 



What actually happened was this barge ran aground right in front of where I was fishing, the only thing that kept it from hitting the sea wall was the mound of mud it built up in front of it as it came across the shallow shore line.  I had three rods out, he buried two lines and wrapped another one around his cleats.  Anyway you look at it, I ended up re-rigging 3 rods.

Not really Don, it was constantly heading towards shore and me.

I had three rods out and all of them were bent over like that, they fished OK after he backed out and left, so I guess only time will tell.  Two lines were actually buried under the new mud hill feature he made, and the third got wrapped around his cleat some how, none of the terminal tackle survived sorry to say.  He backed out slowly so I was able to cut the line on the one wrapped on his cleat to save my gear.

This isn't the first time I had a run in with a barge, although not this close up.  It is also one of the reasons I only use cheap rods, if it had been something of higher quality, I would make book that I would be crying about at least one broken rod.

That's certainly the biggest and heaviest weight I've ever seen on a fishing line.

Couldn't figure out a way to get it into the cooler.    Don't think I could have Filleted it even with my electric knife.

#1/0 wide gap circle hook, WalMart specials, 1/4 of a shrimp that was pretty mushy after being frozen and thawed a few times, and 8lb, 12lb, and 15lb test lines.  Took 3 rods to bring that sucker in. 

The bad part was that I was tearing up the 8 to 10 inch croaker which are good eating, after that thing backed out and left, all that would hook up were hard heads.  I was there for a couple hours after that and just as I ran out of bait the water started to clear up enough that I caught a croaker and a whiting on my last two pieces of bait.

Wanted to update Mike, I fished that cut a few times now and have been skunked every time, still haven't figured out why.  It is very soft muck there now, I bet the crabs even sink when they walk on it.

Well... Just like a brushlile in a lake... Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't

This is a bad time of the year for the Bayou too, a lot of fish are moving in and out, and not really committing on where they want to be yet.

It is also right across from that barge something or other construction, and they are dredging it pretty heavily, don't know if it is effecting it or not, it didn't earlier in the year, the activity has increased, so who knows.
