Got my eye on the Savvy Micro but I'm unfamiliar with Dobyns rods. My other choices are the Tatula rod, 13 Omen Black as I've had one of these before and loved it, the Denali Kovert, and the Falcon Bucoo Micro. Is the Savvy micro the best out of these choices? One thing I will say, and that is I HATE cork. I hate how it feels, and I hate how nasty it looks after it gets a little dirty. I didn't mind it on my Omen, but I really prefer EVA especially in the rain. So...the Savvy.....

The Micro Savvy SSM series are great rods for under $200... They balance better than most at that price. The micro guide system actually creates a lighter livelier feel to the rod over the std guides...due to weight reduction on the upper blank.

Simple solution to the cork...seal it with cork sealer when you get it and it wont get ever get nasty...and its cheap!

I can't compare these rods for you. I simply don't use anything other than Dobyns.

The savvy is an outstanding rod in its price point. I haven't played with anything in that price point that can beat it. (Played = friends rod or on the shelf).

A question? What will you be using it for?

I personally would put any Dobyns rod against any manufactures rod in the same price point. Something you'll have to consider in the cork handle, will it make you not like the rod before you even pick it up? If so, stick with the EVA. If you can get past the cork handle, the savvy micro guide is a sensitive rod, that ups the anti on casting ease and accuracy. I use them for my vibrating swim jigs and the sensitivity is awesome, I can feel the smallest difference in the bait (indicating a strike or a piece of vegetation), the back bone is excellent and drives the big single hook of the vibrating swim jig easily through the roof of a bass's mouth.

I will be using the rod for soft plastics, and maybe some swim jigs. I was eyeing the 7 3 MH-F rod.

Mike Cork

It will will be a great fit for those. Definitely have the back bone for hook set and tip action for casting. I'm not a big micro guide fan, however those that use them regularly swear the sensitivity is better, that will play well into the Soft Plastic applications.

Someone will be by soon that should be able to give you a comparison.

Based on what you are looking for, the Denali Kovert matches the hatch. It comes with EVA split grips (not cork). It also has semi micro guides, basically in-between micro-guides and normal guides. It's the best of both worlds. It' is also about $30 cheaper than the Dobyn's Savy. I personally got the 6'10 crankbait version and I love it.

I agree with Ryan, I dont think the savvy is the best option at its price point. The champ is worth the extra money.

I would just roll with jadewood instead of the kovert 99 bucks

I have a Savvy Micro 734 and it became my favorite jig rod the first time I fished it. Very good balance and great sensitivity. I have teamed up with a Lew's Tournament Speed Spool and 15lb Tatsu.

Another thing worth mentioning is Dobyn's great customer service. They are without a doubt the most personable and customer oriented rod company I've dealt with. They've treated me the same as I would expect they'd treat Pro Staff. -Jim

I can definitely attest to that !

I have the Savvy 735 with 50 lb. Power Pro on it and I can attest to what Mike said about strength and sensitivity.  Don't have an issue with cork but that's just me.  I have some Loomis Rods that are near 30 years old with cork grips/handles and in as good of shape now as then other than some dirt and grime which is my fault for not keeping them clean.

I have used many of rods in my time of fishing. Many brands that include Shimano, Abu, Denali, St Croix, Dobyns, Carrot Stix, Powell, Berkley, Fenwick, and 13. I will have to say that the Dobyns line is bar far the best bang for the buck I have yet to use. Don't let anyone tell you the Savvy isn't a sensitive rod, I have zero issues feeling bites with it. I love my Champion, but I only got it so that with the 7'3 length, the rod would balance out better with the reel I use it for. I cant seem to break these rods, and I have had a few bent completely over on a few occasions. Have no worries with the Savvy, its like the Curado of rods, a true workhoarse.  8)
My wife says she is gonna leave me if I go fishing one more time........lord how I will miss that woman.

The Saavy is a solid choice, Another one in the same price range is the Kistler KLX. NFC blank , Fuji reel seat and K series alconite guides. Mine is a super straight build . I have a 7ft. heavy with a Tatula and It's been impressive so far.

You can always wrap a handle if you dont like cork. Pretty easy fix, and you might really like a wrapped handle.

I just bought a savvy micro in a spinning rod and I am absolutely in love with it.  It is the most sensitive spinning rod that I have ever used. I do have one issue with it though,  I can't see well enough to thread the line through the micro guides. Getting old sucks !!

One thing to remember about micro is that if you tie leaders at all...they can hang in guides. In general that isnt a great thing, gets annoying and could wear on guides at some point.

Me personally, micro isnt anything magical. It can help in windy situations from what I have found. But, if you like micro, then go for it.

I am using DX models for spinning currently, but have used the Savvy in the past. Savvy is a solid rod for sure.
