Anybody having a bit of an issue with the cork on your Savvy rods kind of coming off. It seems that I am losing little chunks throughout my use with them.
My wife says she is gonna leave me if I go fishing one more time........lord how I will miss that woman.

BassMan83

It's probably just the filler.

Dark3

Yep. I sent one back upon delivery one time for replacement and I have one now that its flaking off. I have just accepted it for the price point

Dark3

Funny you mention it because Im trying to sell one local to raise money toward a drop shot rig and I was looking at the cork noticing it about an hour ago

Dark3

Also might let go one of the curado I's I built

Capt. BassinLou

I have been fishing mine for about a month, and I have not seen or noticed any pieces coming off of mine.

Here's a used Champ, a brand new Savvy and a used Savvy.

The new Savvy cork is kind of weird.

Thanks. Unfortunately I have around 260 invested in each one so I would def have to take a loss. It would also be a challenge to ask more than the same reel brand new. Im after a TFO tactical drop shot rod and a reasonably good spinning reel

You have OS bearings and Hawg Handles on them with anodized parts right? Then you should have no problem getting at least $200-225. I know I would pay that for one if I was to buy one from you.

Yeah I am with LMG you should be able to get at least 200 for those reels. I was looking online at some of the TFO rods yesterday. They look intriguing, don't really hear that much about them.

LMG this is disheartening since I am looking at a savvy in the future. I may just go champion or go with another brand.

LOL, when I saw the title I thought you all were talking about how Mike Cork is a savvy fisherman or something like that.  Now you got me worried as I have one Savvy and a couple of Champions that I will have to keep an eye on as far as the cork crumbling.  I have some Loomis rods that are over 20 years old that have no issues like that.   >:(

Mike Cork

There is not any sort of across the board cork issue. Been using Dobyns rods a long time (only a few savvys) and haven't had an issue what so ever. By nature cork is segmented and can flake or crumble.

Dobyns rods are made with the best cork available. But that doesn't mean something didn't happen to your rod, so please contact Dobyns directly with individual concerns.

oh and I am a savvy angler in my own mind  ~shade

I just wanted to see if there was just a common issue with the rods. Considering that they are the "lower level" in their line up, if it was just something that happens to them I can accept that. Or if there is some kind of trick to prevent that. I know Gary stops by here all the time, so I figured he might see this and have an answer for me. I am not in any way unsatisfied with the Savvy whatsoever.

~roflmao I thought the same thing when I read the title.

I have a Savvy that I got back in December. It's been my number one jig rod. The cork is still great. I had a couple of guide/tip issues. Richard Dobyns was quick to respond.  -Jim

I have no issues here. Love these rods. Getting that Champ was not a smart thing to do.

Oh I still want a champion.... As soon as I make up for the props, I'm going to get one.  ;D

If you guys arent covering your cork...no matter the brand or grade of cork, you need to be using cork sealer. The filler can come out from general use. The Savvy is A grade cork.  I always cover my grips regardless.

Grades of cork go from A to AAAA. The higher the grade, the more expensive. Cork in general has gone down hill in quality. It doesnt have much to do with the rod company, its the production of it in far off lands. AAAA grade cork is what is found on high end fly rods. Dobyns uses AAA on the Extreme rods. You can see the difference in fillers between the lines.

OK, so some U40 after I clean the cork with some Magic Eraser should do the trick? If so, then that's what I will do to the rest of my Dobyns rods.

Yep, that will help alot in general. I use warm soapy water to clean with, but if the eraser works, go with that.

I wrap all my rods, just personal preference. Love the Dobyns cork, but just a fan of wraps.

OK, next question. Its $4.99 at TW, how many do I need to do 6 rods? Note, all my rods are split grip.
