June 16, 2005 - Grand Kankakee Marsh report

Slop is coming along nice...pretty soon I'll have all the good fishing spots to myself as most of the people take one look at the slop and go searching for open water.

Started and finished with the same bait today, a 5" texas-rigged weightless tube, white worked on top of the slop, scooted quickly across any openings and allowed to rest on the edge of the slop...got several nice blowups but the fish were missing the bait and I couldn't figure out the why of it until around 7 p.m. when I got a similar blowup and then tossing quickly back to the same edge hooked into a snake - 22" pike. 7:15 went to final location and caught 2 small bass 12 & 13 inchers.

Nature notes: herons cruising majestically overhead, hordes of goldfinches, great horned owl, skunk (gave it a wide berth), leopard frogs, soft shell turtles, and the gostlings are getting bigger and bigger every day! Mosquitoes have hatched but they're not too bad yet, gnats are everywhere...as I was leaving a kingbird sat on a branch near the footbridge and nodded to me like saying "you had a great afternoon, now it's time to go". The perfect finish...a gorgeous sunset tonite to view on the drive home.

Fish that is a very good artical

and your right about finding hidden treasures in off the road places not to many folks would even think about some of the places you talked about. you are also right about respecting other peoples property and stay off of it if it's posted or try and get permission from the owner for the next time and if he said no respect his answer and go on your way.
