Norman Lures Speed Clips

I remove split rings from my hard baits and use the 1.5mm x 4mm Speed Clips on my cranking rods. I don't fish crank baits a lot but changing lures is a lot faster with the clips than tying. I believe their weight is less than that of the split rings although I've never weighed each of them to find out. I'm wondering if anyone here has tried or uses Speed Clips and what you think of them?

I use clips with soft plastic swim baits and swimming jigs, The Norman is a very good product, except I can't get them open without a pliers. Old age and arthritis creeping in. I use 2 other house brands of clips and have never lost a fish.

I used to use those all the time. Not sure why I ever stopped. Huh, those were great and made changing lures so much easier.

Good to know someone is still using them. We'll have to add them to our next Norman order.

I've been using speed clips for years. They make changing hard baits quick and easy except when your hands are cold and wet. The only time the weight has been an issue was with the light weight yo zuri hardcore shad. It would sink slowly instead of suspending. The bass didn't seem to mind, so I didn't either. I put them on a big paper clip and keep them in my hook box.

I change the round split rings to oval Worth X2 split rings. Eliminates the need for a clip, and the knot never gets in the gap. Plus, they're lighter weight than a similar sized stainless split ring. I've never had one fail.

You might also check out Breakaway Tackle's Fast Links, or Tactical Anglers Power/Fast Clips. Both are popular with salt anglers & both make changing lures faster than tying knots. Not sure how they would be on some smaller sized bass lures however.

I figured someone else must use them since they're still available. 

I used to have the same problem with cold, wet, sometimes almost numb fingers. I found that instead of squeezing them like a clothes pin I held the back and worked them more like a split ring applying pressure to the side, I could even do it with numb fingers.

I use them all the time for cranks and traps. But I don't remove the split rings. Does that help?

 I use both sizes but have found fewer baits that work with the small ones. I leave the split ring on also unless it is something like a Pop R.

Got to go see what these are about. I am new to this "addiction/hobby" and do not have 5 poles rigged for different situations (yet). Consider me a rookie in training camp.
If the fish aren't biting one type of lure, I go through the entire process of changing out the lure on the one pole I have. 
Would this be recommended to speed up the process?

I only use these on hard baits but it for sure speeds up the process of changing baits.

Removing the split ring makes attaching and removing the lure a lot quicker and since the speed clips act as a split ring the lure's action in the water isn't altered.

They also give a very unique action for worm presentations too.
If you can slide them through a jig's eye it also gives a very unique action but anything under 3/8 oz. jig you may find it hard to fit through the eye.

VZ, I still use them with cranks but I too started using them when I had a single rod. They have been around for a long time.

I believe the hard water anglers started thier use.
At least around my parts.

those look a little different that the ones I've used in the past... I've got just the old school clips, and even they are sometimes a pain to squeeze apart in the cold... lol


And whoever mentioned Pop-R's... yeah, they are too much trouble for Pop-R's.... lol

Wow,  I have never seen these before.  I don't see using these with a texas rigged worm,  but for hardbaits, etc this looks like a good idea. Especially those of us who don't carry 12 rods to the lake each trip.

I tried them when they first came out. My thick fingers couldn't open them easily. I'm sometimes fumble fingered and gave up on them. I thought they were a good idea. Just not for me.

With the split ring removed and using only the speed clip, watching various lures near the surface, I've never been able to detect any difference in action. If the split ring is left on the lure, the speed clips become additional weight and will bring the nose down more on suspending and floating baits. Leaving the split rings on a bait also makes using the speed clips more difficult because you're forced to squeeze the clip open to get it over the split ring.

It sure cuts down on re-ties and with the split rings removed from all of my crankbaits it only takes me a couple of seconds to remove or attach a bait.

For those who struggle with opening the clips.

I use a forceps that I always have along anyways to remove hooks from fishes.

Rapala makes some but alot of people do also.

Even little fingers struggle.

I do the same with all of my crankbaits and liplesss cranks. Been using them for many years with absolutely no complaints. I keep a few attached to the hook keeper on each of my cranking rods for convenience.

On a side note, even though I remove the split rings from all of my hard baits I only use the clips on the bait styles mentioned. All others I tie direct to the line tie eyelet. In certain situations I even tie my cranks or lipless  cranks direct, but for the most part I use the clips with them.
