It usually gets tolerable in april and fishing opens on May 1st. Some of the river systems are open year round but its hard to cast with 4000 grams of thinsulate on your hands.

Is all lake fishing closed until may or just Bass?

Bass and musky are closed and since I dont Ice Fish Im not sure about the rest. Panfish is always open and fishing season for bass starts on may 1st. The ice is gone before that but I dont think you can fish for walleye then either.

Are the Bass still spawning in May when the season opens?

That depends on the weather. Most of the time its nearly over and thats why they have the season to try to limit fishing for spawners. Its a liberal area and they dont want you to bother the fish when they are spawning. lol

I had heard that  :-\

That the fishing season is closed to include the spawn to protect it. Here in the southern waters the spawn is a very sought after season. Thats when everyone hits the water trying to catch the monster.....

We have several catch a release programs that help insure the bigguns bet put back though.

Same goes in California where I lived b4, we fish year round and the spawn brings the girth. I think its unnecessary here cause most peeps dont like bass and the only peeps who keep them catch them on accident

I am a firm believer that nature will take care of it's own and that we as fisherman don't hurt the survival of bass. But in extreme norther states I know they don't grow as fast are as long so I am kinda out of my realm there. I would think that a catch and release only during the spawn would work. Expecially if most folks won't be keeping them anyway.

Mike....Living in two different climates I find this a mystery up here. The climate shouldnt affect the size of the hatch? Sure they grow slower but dont they lay the same amount of eggs? Also I never catch small bass up here in Wisconsin lets sat under 12 inches and in ca I caught lotts of them. But here I catch a lott less bass all of good size? This is part of the mystery Im trying to solve. What do you think?

GreenKeeperlt, this is a great question and I started a thread in the Tips and Techniques section to see if we could get some help with it. I have noticed the same types of things and don't really have a hard answer for it but I know we will get plenty of thoughts on it here shortly. Check out this thread
