I'm a shad color type Jerkbait fishereman.  Whats the prime conditions to fish clown colored JB's?  I don't get that.  It looks so un-natural.

A lot of guys use it in overcast conditions. I sometimes use clown in overcast or drizzle but prefer fire tiger. I have a custom color I have made for rainy days. I call it "purple fade". An undercoat of chartruese with a very, very light mist of purple. Somewhat similar to Table Rock Shad but more subtle. The chartruese bleeds through the purple in low light conditions.

Un-natural? Is that supposed to make a difference? I use clown colored X-Raps because smallies like them. I don't pay attention to whether it's sunny, cloudy, or raining, I throw them, bass eat them.

i used to have a jointed minnow many years ago, caught all sorts of fish on it. old man lost it and never replaced it.

bass eat some very interesting colors for sure.  i have caught many bass on table rock, bull shoals, and grande on long bill rebels that i have painted school bus yellow.  another color that works especially well on table rock and bull shoals is the standard blue chrome, but i take a yellow carter marks a lot, and cover the blue with the yellow ink.  it turns to an emerald green.  that color has won me lots of dollars over the years.  now, i do have a color that more mimics a thread fin shad, that i came up with years ago, and it always seems to do better on overcast days.  on my jerkbaits that i hand paint, i leave them translucent just as a shad is when you hold them up to the light.  i know many here in my area love to through a clown color, but me personally have never really had a killer day on it.

I have found the same.  Clown works very well for me on sunny days or cloudy days for smallies in clear water.

I particularly like that when you are working the jerkbait real fast, as opposed to the jerk-jerk let it sit for 10 seconds method...

LOZ, I always wondered about that color...and then I ran across some cold water bluegills...that went from a lavender/purple 'top' to a muted yellow side/belly...  for me the light went on.  could see where the color combinations might 'connect' with a bass.

I also like clown in water conditions where theres a bit of a green stain...

Clown and Gold are my go to colors, usually have one or the other (or both) tied on.

Love 'em for smallies on nice, calm days. Jerk, jerk, jerk, pause,  jerk, jerk, pause. Hit!

I seem to catch more pike on clown coloured baits then bass. At any rate I've personally found they work better for me in stained water with overcast skies.
The only things that matter in life: Jeeps, guns and fishing.

Smallies up here in New England really like the clown color, but the largemouth will eat them too. Any skies, ultra-clear to moderately stained water. The other colors that seem to work well for me are gold/black back and either perch or firetiger (close to perch).

On overcast days if the clown doesn't work then I'll throw bone. Usually gets the job done.

I have always stayed away from them thinking they were a gimmic over the years. I may have to pick one up.
