To me when someone refers to "main lake" area on my lake it means the biggest section of open water
In this map image of the lake I fish South Holston  it is the largest area of water below the road marked 34. The dotted line is the Va/Tn border
I hope that's what you were looking for :)

Most lakes are made by damming up a river or tributary.  The main lake is the larger area at the dam end.  The Northern end is usually called "up river" in our area anyway.  To get a good idea, you can google a map of Ross Barnett where they are having the BASS Open this weekend.  On that map you can see HWY 43, anything below (South) is the Main Lake and anything above (North) is "up river".  Hope this helps.

Which matches what Lee posted as there is a Dam off to the bottom left where the river runs out to all the other TVA reservoirs :)

Well I just learned something new. Thanks for that info. guys.  8)

Up here in Northern country, us Yankees consider anything that is not a creek arm, tributary or bay as the main lake. We have a lot of natural lakes up here that do not have a dam so I guess that might account for some of the difference in thought.  :-\

main lake to me has always meant the biggest pool of the system
this is a great example of a lake system that is not caused by daming. There is the Main Pool (lake) and several other lake/ponds right next to it. sometimes during flodding this whole system become one lake. But often it is split into 3 main pools and separate ponds.

I've always considered anything that isn't a pocket, cove, or creek arm as main lake. I can see the other idea if it is a river fed system.
