A horizontal eye will give you a better hook up to land ratio, however most will grab more slim and grass like you've experienced. The vertical obviously pulls through it much better but you have to combat poor hook ups and fish spitting the jig on the way back to the boat.

The NuTech's design hooks a bass in the roof of the mouth every time and with the unique angles of the hook and eyelet it reduces snags tremendously.

i will give what i know about fishing the NuJig through vegetation.  to me eyelet orientation has little to do with hanging grass.  i know many will argue that fact, but i believe most of the vegetation shedding is done with the head.  the eyelet of the hook is round and that alone will shed grass.  horizontal eyelets will definitely help in setting the hook because the pull of your line tie is always from the top of the ring.  that gives you more turning leverage.  with a vertical eyelet, the pull line of your line tie is in the middle of the ring and by that alone, you lose turning leverage.  position on the eyelet on the head would have more to do with gathering vegetation than being oriented flat or vertical.

when fishing through slime, it will stick to just about anything.  i have fished the NuJig through very thick coontail moss, hydrilla, and other various grasses without any issues.  we have many people that fish the NuJig on the California delta, and all have stated that the NuJig comes through the tullies better than anything else.  we have many people admit that the NuJig came through vegetation better than any of their so called vegetation jigs with vertical eyelets.

one last observation about the vertical eye theory.  if the vertical eye is what is keeping the jig from collecting weeds, then why is your fishing line not also.  i think weeds collect on the fishing line first.

I ordered some almost a year ago. I haven't had to order anymore because I haven't lost any, but I have given a few out for others to try. It is by far my favorite jig.

Mr1ply

thanks for the great info. ill have to give the nu tech jigs a try next time i do a jig order.

I fished the Nutec jigs this past weekend for the first time. I was hoping I could share my results and also get feedback from others who are fishing them. First fish was a 3.5 pounder and was hooked in the roof of the mouth. Nice!!  After that, I lost 4 smaller fish in a row. All 4 felt like they were hooked up, but fell off as they were gliding across the top of the water while reeling to the boat. I'm was wondering if the two weedless legs might be too stiff for the smaller fish to bite down on. Or maybe the smaller fish mouths were unable to fully engulf the bait and it was preventing the hook from penetrating the fishes mouth. Thoughts??  Anybody had similar experiences?  I'm wondering if I should try and trim the length of the weedless legs to help this problem.

from my experience, small bass have a hard time getting the entire jig in their mouth.  i have noticed that on small bass, that i can completely rip the lip loose from the head.  could be i set the hook way too hard :shocking:.  i did get to go fishing tonight, and we just ripped them.  ended up with 14 keepers (15" plus).  had several 3lbers. with one brownie in the 4lb. range.  i hope that there are others that will get out and enjoy the great night fishing this time of the year.  the water temp was 66.  most of the bass were in the 15 ft. range.  about half of them were caught on the new Blitz football head, which should be here in a couple of weeks.

now that i have a bit more time to address dealing with smaller bass, NuTech does have jigs with smaller hooks in the works for those situations, and will be more suitable for fishing with lighter line.

Bo,
Thanks for the reply. I'm hitting the water again early tomorrow morning. I guess it could be my hook set causing a problem. I fish braid on my jig rod and mono on my top water rod. It's always hard to remember which hook set I need to be using when I'm switching rods constantly depending on the surroundings. I may experiment with trimming the weedless arms depending on how the fishing is. Thanks again!!

this i like the sounds of!

Bo, not to put you on the spot but I need a NuTech crappie jig head before April. Catching monster Sac-a-lait in the middle of brush piles is a blast but I loose two or three cards of jigs a trip. I think if you can engineer this, it will be amazing!!!

But....I've been know to catch a few crappie on a 3/8 ounce jig as well ~shade

mike, i already have them.  just some manufacturing and material hurdles to be figured out.  we usually fish all day with the same jig.

That's what I'm talking about, not that a crappie jig is expensive but it's a pain to retie them. I'd love some NuTech Crappie Grabbers :-*

This is some of the best news I have heard in a while. Will be able to fish cedars without everyone around hearing my immature vocabulary.

Uhhhhh Bo  , I need some crappie jigs too lol.
And you better get ready for some contest pics this weekend cause I'm all stocked up and heading to the lake :)
P.S. Tell me how to fish the Crazy Jig ? I'll get to try it out tomorrow , cold fronts coming so I dunno how it's gonna play out.
Stop by the Garage and let me know if you have Maintenance issues that you need assistance with.

mike would be a better on to ask than me.  i am a rookie fising with them.  i have had success fising them in place of a crankbait, and we did catch some a while back out of a brush pile.  i think those were on a video.  the only advice i can give is to wait to feel the bass pulling you before setting the hook.  i think they have a tendency to nip at this type of bait a lot.

The Crazy Jig is an all terrain vehicle for bass fishing. It goes any where and does anything. Best retrieve is slow and steady so they can home in on it. However in clearer water a stop and go can be fantastic as well.

Fish it like you would a crankbait, spinnerbait, or swim jig. Bump it into cover, drag it on the bottom or burn it back to the boat. If I could only have one bait in the boat with me it would probably be this one as it can do it all except sit on the surface, you can make it bubble the surface but it won't sit still there.

If there are bass they is a retrieve that they will eat.

Fished my NuTech jigs for the first time yesterady. Gotta say, there great! I don't think you can loose them. Caught nothing but dinks but that's OK. Still caught more than a few of the others out there.

I only used the keys in the shot thinking I'd have a couple of big ones to follow. I believe the first one was actually a bit bigger and I didn't even give him a photo op and didn't bother with scales. Nothing went much over half a pound. Needless to say Nutech jigs have become my new favorite jigs. Every hookup was solid upper lip and I found myself pitching into stuff just trying to get hung up. Great design!

Great news.  Do you have any close up pics of the new fb head?  Been saving up my pennies to make a large purchase as soon as everything gets in.

QuoteAnyway I'm curious what colors most of you use when fishing a jig. I normally keep it very simple. Black and blue, black and red, or black brown and amber.

When to you throw these various colors?

Mike, I'm like you - limited colors do the job most of the time. I love to have a large inventory of colored skirts from fishingskirts.com to be able to change color combos depending on water clarity and my mood and believe that color is in the eye of the beholder, fish's and angler's - both of which are totally different 99% of the time. What we see is rarely what a fish sees considering variations in water clarity, light source and intensity and background.

I get bored using just the colors you mentioned and like the high contrast colors I saw on the site, not that it makes much of a difference. A jig in the right hands always catches bass regardless of color (except for the following: solid white, bright orange, pink, blue-green, yellow, chartreuse, which I consider better spinnerbait or soft plastic colors - just my color bias).

I think trailer colors as important at times as skirt colors, though mix & match do fine most of the time.
It's kind of like colors you wouldn't be caught dead in - you either like em or hate em!
