I need some very good directions on wiring my trolling motor. I bought a used alumacraft competitor and the trolling motor was not working. I got it working but I know wiring is wrong. What I need is a very explicit diagram of the wiring in the plug which 3 wires go in that. Black White & red. Then the plug receptical has 4 wires coming into it.Black and orange come from one battery & Black and red from the other battery. What I want, there is a switch on the pedal 12 / 24 and off. I want to be able to switch from 12 to 24 volt so it works properly. I have read posts and still confused so I need to have some pics showing where the wires go. I don't wanna short anything out. I have no chargers hooked up and the trolling batteris are seperate from my starting batteries. I have no manuals for the boat. Please help me asap. Thanks.

I got a couple questions ,
You have a trolling motor that has 3 prongs and your boat plug in is 4 ? Or is it the other way around. Boat has 3 trolling motor has 4 ? I had an old brute 12/24 on my old Ranger.  I bought a new TM for it and was strictly 24 v  with only 2 wires   Wires coming in the back of the plug on the bow  were like this before I changed anything

Black & red from one battery and orange white from another

The trolling motor plug has 3 wires , It has white black and red and the 4 wires come from the batteries. Now Im assuming that the black and red come from one battery to the female plug and the other orange and black come from the other battery to the female plug. Now the question I have to is the female you show I can make my wiring match that but I need to know how the wires go on the male end. So they line up properly with the female end if you follow what I'm gettin at.

Thought of one more thing is there a jumper inside the female to make it switch to 24 volt when I switch it on the pedal?

One more thing you show black , orange ,white & red , I have 2 black a red and a orange 2 negative are my black. orange and red are positive.

I'd almost bet your gonna have to get a 3 prong female for a 12/24v system for the boat.  If it was mine ...... And keep in mind I'm no expert :). I would just wire it 24v only   I'm guessing here but I would think your 3 wires on TM plug are red 12v , white 12v and black ground
Here's a picture of the wiring diagram for my original 12/24 plug female at bow.
And at the batteries
Here's where mine switches from 4 wires to 2 for 24v all the time .  Back of 4 pin plug on bow

Front (inside of plug ) of 4 pin at TM

There's a jumper bar between white and red   And my 2 wires now have 24v.
3 wires confusing me lol. Hopefully someone smarter than me can come along and give you some better help

Anyway you could upload some pictures like I did of your plugs apart ?

I've read this a couple times now and I think I know where you are at.

The plug is going to have two hot wires and a common ground. If I remember correctly the black is the common ground and the Red and White are power. (Bigwrench, that schematic you have could help verify this)

The receptical should have the two common grounds connected. So verify which hole in the receptical is the grounds and make sure that the appropriate pin on the plug is also ground. Leaving the other two pins as power, connect appropriately.

Then your batteries have to be set up correctly in order to provide both 12v and 24v options. To get 24v you have to have the batteries in Series. This is a great diagram of how to do it and where the 24v side of the receptical will be.

Good info all around. Schematic Mike put up tells it all in a nutshell. If you have something totally different let us know and get some pics of the plugs so we can all be on the same page and get you set up. ;D

Ok I get what that is doing , but I have my pedal with the pin wheel to change speeds 1 to 5 then the push button you step on to make it go & last but least a switch on the side which has 12 volt , 24 volt & Off and i'm trying to wire it so I can use the switch on the pedal so I do not have constant 24 volt except when I fish strong current in the river. So my plug with the 3 wires red , black & white come out and from that pedal. Is the white 24 volt and the red 12 volt & black ground?

Could be. You'll have to look and see which is wired in Series and which is wired to just one battery.

The White Wire is 12V or 24V, depending on what you have the switch on the pedal set at.  When you set it at 12V, it just pulls power off of the bottom left + red wire, and the white wire from the bottom.  Since the bottom left + red wire is just 12V, it only pulls 12V from the white because the series with the other battery is not fully connected.

When you put the switch to the 24V, it pulls power from the Top left + red wire, and the white wire.  Now, since the + red wire in the top left of the plug with the white wire at the top, which is a fully connected 24V series, it now runs in 24 Volt.  Basically, the switch in the pedal is a toggle switch between which Red Wire you pull the + current from.  Make sense?
