I started with this kit:  Master G22 Airbrush & Airbrush Depot Compressor

It'll serve you well for a long time—my compressor is silver instead of black, but it's been going for over 2.5 years now and still pumps air.  The airbrush is dual-action and gravity feed, and for the $$ it'd be hard to beat.

The only other item I'd recommend is this:  Mini Inline Air Filter.  It will save you many ruined paint jobs from condensation spraying out of the airbrush at most inopportune times.

Hope this helps,

Ben

Createx is actually cheap as far as airbrush paints go.  You can use the Plaid® acrylic paints from Walmart, though they need more thinning and don't flow as smoothly as Createx.  And, the Createx color selection is a bit better for lure painting, transparent and pearlized colors in particular.

BTW, some guys thin their paint with Windex, but tap water will work just fine.

This is the paint I'm talking about:  Apple Barrel matte acrylic paint.  It's in-store only at Walmart, though you can probably order it online from other dealers.

Does anyone know what type of paint some of the new baits are being painted with, these
paints change color as you move them around. The ones I have seen have a purple, blue
affect. I wonder how they paint the bait to get the look.

They use color-shifting paints, like these.  They're a bit pricey, which is why they're not more commonly used by lure painters.
