I didn't want to continue to side line a post on the Pro Qualifier so I started a new thread that branched from that conversation.  The thread was talking about how people break the rules and run up the price of their reels in this situation.  As I mentioned in that thread that I had seen reels go for almost a new price and it went from there to where products were bought from two different screen names but the same paypal account.  Tends to lead one to believe that people are using different accounts to run up the prices on their products.  So the question is, "why doesn't ebay address this issue"?  Have you ever tried to contact ebay?  Almost impossible and if you do it will only frustrate you.  The next question, "how do you protect yourself"?  Well,  I believe in setting a top price I'll give which involves the market price and add a little extra if it's something you can't live without.  Absolutely don't go past this amount and don't get into a bidding war.  On items with a small starting point there is really no reason to bid until the end.  Don't show your hand early.  If it's set at a high price to start you might want to bid early.  You can end up the only bidder and get it for the starting price.  There is an art to bidding which I haven't acquired yet.  I don't take the time to get wrapped up in the auction thing.  I keep it simple and bid what I can afford.  Rods and reels usually loose about half their value once used unless they're a rare and high demand item and that's where I usually start.  So anyone else with complaints or auction tactics?

There are too many ways the seller can argue the price and selling points. Its up to the consumer to make the educated purchase.

I posted on the previous thread on two Bass Pro Qualifier tournament reels posted on ebay.  If I recall their MSRP was $79.99 plus shipping.  I think they were $49 during that year's Christmas sales.  So I don't see how you could argue a price and selling points up to today's prices of $71 for the left hand model and $48 for the right hand model with 7 hours left on the bidding.  They do bring a good price because they are equivalent to the Abu Gracia Revo models.  However to bid them up to a new price when the Pro Qualifiers are available brand new, I just don't understand.  I thought I overpaid on a couple that had some minor issues but perhaps I got a bargain and didn't know it.  I don't know who's bidding this up.  Like I said before I sold stuff way above what I thought the market rate and I didn't have a second bidder or another screen name to bid on my own stuff.  So there are people that just don't want to loose.

I usually will never bid untill the last few minutes on anything. Always remember that they can't run your bid up if it isn't there. 

Most stuff I buy is usually buy it now.

I usually bid late also, then I the auto bid to what I think it is worth, which is well below what the new price is. If I loose the bid, then somebody wants it more than I do.

I buy a lot of buy it now stuff.  I also bid a max bid I'm willing to pay and leave it alone . I always make sure I check the users feedback ratings and comments section.

I will make note of the buy it now price. Then follow a few auctions of the same item. If I cannot get the auctioned item at less than the buy it now price then i will not bid on it. When an item is shown significantly less than the buy it now price I will wait till the final 30 seconds, put my max bid in ( which is usually significantly lower than the buy it now price). If I get the item great. If not, I wait for the next auction or Buy the item from the buy it now seller.

Don't know if the guy was bidding against himself as someone had suggested or whether he had multiple items.  However, the same photos are used in a new posting of the Bass Pro Qualifier Tournament reels.  In the last offering the left handle model was run up to over $20 over market and the right hand was over market the last time I looked.  Very interesting!

With the eBay app on my phone it alerts me if it's about to end and I'll look and see if it was only a dollar or two between my max bid I may increase in the last minutes to see if I can grab it. But I do that rarely.

I've purchased quite a few reels off ebay as well and set a price I'm willing to pay for a reel be it used or new. If the bidding gets within the cost of a new reel purchased from say Cabelas or BPS which are within driving distance of me then I let the item go to the highest bidder and purchase locally.

Absolutely amazing!  Ebay seller posted another PQT and they have again run it up to a new price (listed as a new display).  This reel sold over a year ago as a Christmas special for $49.99.

Some people just do not know any better. I was bidding on a reel last week. Buy it now is anywhere from $149.95 - $219.95. Retail $219.95 everywhere. Whent the bid went past $149.95 I moved on to the next auction. If I ever really want the reel which I now own four I just go to the $149.95 buy it now guy and order it. The last one I purchased was $104.98

I think some people dont do their research on market value and if its below full MAP even if just by a lil bit they happy. Or in some cases especially if its a hard to get discontinued model when they want it and they have deep pockets... they really want it and just go at it ! Sometimes going way above what was MAP ...

Ive been buying and selling reels on Ebay since July of 2001. Do your feedback check and not just their recent stuff look way back in their history, make sure they not using multiple accounts to run up their own positive feedback, and try to bid or buy it now with people you have purchased with before. If you get a negative gut feeling let it slide.

Some guys on there get hung up in just trying to win and are compulsive ebayers and end up paying right at full retail in some cases just to win ... the moment of bidding rush gets them.

I think ebay can bite ya if careless with your bidding or research ... but for the most part dont think theres much hanky panky ... if your particular item your watching seems to be wishy washy just move to the next ...

I dont always buy my reels/rods on ebay but do when I cross a deal. For the most part I try and support my local (or should I say closest) tackle stores around me. Sometimes in the long run having a relationship with your retailer can get you out of a pinch or help you so the extra I spend with them help support local businesses and comes full circle down the road...
