Never fished a baitcastee before. I know I know, the words you'd never expect to see on a bass forum! Anyway I'm ready to get into fishing them. Problem is I dont know what specs gear ratios ,rod strength, line strength, rod length.. I know that I want a low profile reel. Also I like to keep my bass fishing light as possible. I have a flimsy rod with 8" braid, a 2500 shimqno on compre with 12# line, rod rated 6-14#s. Im looking for a rod and reel combo, will match and mix but not very comfortable in my ability of locking eight one. Main uses: Worms, crawdadZ, lizards, freelined worms or rigged on bullet weights. So need something to use for LIGHT lures. I want to pitch it accurately under trees and holes and beds. Cranks or other hard baits, don't fish em a lot but when I do I want the ability to throw them. Any kind of shollow deep long shirt bill diving topwaters ext.. Heavy stuff like flipping frogs on algae or any beaver deeper applications, mqy throw deep cranks on it if its better suited. already have a rod for this, a diawa combo with a 1/2 to 1pz rating and the rod feels heavy enough. I'm looking to order from academy cabelas or BPS. I can try it out in store at dicks. I'm a teenager on a cheap budget. Realistically I can only throw like 70$ on each combo to get all three and even that's pricey to me

IMHO, you would be much better off buying one good combo instead of trying to find a BC combo for $70 dollars.  $70 dollars is not going to get you much even in the used market.

Look for rods in the 7 foot length Medium Heavy Power and Fast action, Reels try to find something in the 6.4:1 ratio or close.     This will make for a good all round combo.

Have to agree with tavery5. $70 for a casting combo will just lead to disapointment, unless someone runs a killer black Friday sale I have not heard about. The bass pro shop pro qualifier is the least expensive casting reel that works good enough and is built weel enough that I have complete faith in recomending it. It's base price is $99 but will often be on sale for $69 You may even find it in a good combo with a decent BPS rod for a good deal, but not $70 for both. Academy sports sells a store brand H2O reel that will be around $50 I have not used them but they seem to be built well, they are about even with the lower BPS reels such as the extreme. They are still just a bit below what I would recomend, but if the reel at least has an aluminum frame, then it might be decent enough to work for awhile. Okuma has some killer deals going on right now, I'm not sure of the details, but they build a good reel, you might check out those prices. Other here have actual user experience with them and can tell you which models they prefer. While i will never say that the rod is not important, it is, i will say that the reel is a lot more important for a new user. Any rod can cast baits just fine, they might not be sensitve, they might be heavy and they might not have great quality components, but you can still cast just fine with a cheap rod. The reel however has to be of good quality or it will give you fits.

I have a almost brand new Wright & McGill Skeet reel for sale, $60 and it's yours. Just trying to get rid of some stuff I don't use or need.

I would not recomend that reel for anyone, let alone a new user. There is a good reason skeet gets paid to use them.

The Bass Pro by me is having a Black Friday sale of $70 for Pro Qual with a rod.
My wife says she is gonna leave me if I go fishing one more time........lord how I will miss that woman.

Yeah, saw that ad.  That would be the ticket.

H20 Mettle is or will be on sale for around $30, this week or next. I saw a few All Star Classic rods on Acadamy's website ranging in price from $24 to $29, and they will probably have the rod blow out soon, which brings the prices down big time.

Even though you are bass fishing, look into All Star's Classic inshore specific rods, they are good rods, and sensitive for the price, They have an assortment of light to heavy rods in various lengths. They are also made to hold up to heavier salt water fish, so would hold up well to bass easy.

Old stuff, but a good rod is Berkley's Cherrywood, it runs about $20, and not as sensitive as a Kistler, will still catch a boat load of fish.

PQ combo for $70. well there is your killer black Friday sale I had not heard of yet. That's hard to beat right there. Seen that Academy was clearncing the Okuma Citrix for $50. Thats a heck of a deal there also, put it on an off the shelf decent rod thats bound to be on sale soon and you have another great setup.

I am shooting for the PQ. I just hope BP has several of them in stock. ProReel is the Citrix a good reel? What does it compare to?

Pro Reel

I think the Citrix is a fine reel. I can't really compare them to anything, there are a lot of very good reels out there that are similar in one way or another. If you don't have any preconceived favorite, go with the best deal on any of the good ones. The way the reel feels mounted on a rod and the way you palm the reel is justa s important. Don't buy any you have not held while mounted an a rod to be sure it fits your hand comfortably.

Pro qualifier combo for 70 on Black Friday.

Good deal for the money, this one would be tough to beat.

I like the brake system on the PQ much better than the Citrix.  As far as I'm concerned the limits of adjustment ruins that reel.

hated the Citrix took it back after using twice.

Going to get one of these I think. I pulled in a nice 3lber(not the biggest but still) on the H20 mettle and ethos. It was like he was barely there. Ethos Crankbait rod is legit.
