Why is my reel making a clicking sound during retrieve?

I just bought a new Abu Garcia Revo SX, and took it out for the first time today, first time it has been used aside from a few casts in the backyard. The reel casts fine, and seems to perform in every way fine, but about 3/4 of the time during the retrieve, there is a clicking noise coming from the reel which I think? is coming from the opposite side of the reel as the handle. I can somewhat feel the clicking in the handle, but that could also just be the vibration from whatever it is that I can feel throughout the reel. I caught a just under 3 pounder on it as well as a descent sized pickeral and it pulled them in fine, I am just concerned this may turn into a bigger problem, and it is also just an annoyance. As I said, it makes the noise about 3/4 of the time, and the rest it sounds/feels perfectly normal

I have an Orra SX and it did the same thing to me. open up your braking system and i'll bet one of your brakes isn't fully set. thats what mine was it wasn't set on flip or cast but kind of right in the middle not engaging anthing.

The Revo SX has always just had magnetic brakes, so it won't be a brake tab. If you are sure the clicking is coming from the left side, then my guess would be that the spool is hitting an edge or something on that side of the reel. It could also be that the bearing somehow got some grit in it and thats making it tick. There could also just be a loose bit of something left over from the manufacturing process thats bouncing around in the side cover and is ticking the spool. I would start by opening the side cover and looking for anything loose. If everything looks good, I would return it and get a new one.

If it isn't on the left side, what else would you think it could possibly be? I'm pretty sure it is on the left, but not 100%

I can think of several things in the gear case that could do it, but unless you know how to completly disasemble a reel, then don't do it. If it's new, it's under warranty. Most stores will give you an in store trade. If it's an ebay or used reel, that can't be returned, then i would say it might be that it needs cleaned. It could have to much grease in it and that could be stopping the ratchet kick lever from swinging completly out of the way. That will make a clicking noise that you can feel.

Ok, it is brand new so I will open up the sideplate again and double check it again and if I can't find something I'll send it back to TW

One last simple thing it can be that just popped into my head is handle knobs. If a handle knob is not tight, it will have in and out side play just enough to click and you can feel it when you crank. Grab each knob and see if there is excessive play in and out. If so, you can pop the cover off with a bent tip pick or bend a thick paper clip into a 1/16 inch 90 degree bend at the tip and use that to pop the cover out. Then tighten the philips head screw and see of that fixes the problem.

Pro reel, I backyard again today trying to figure out what is going on with it, and it isn't doing it at all now. And it wasn't doing it before I took it on the water either. The reel didn't get wet, but is there anything that for some reason if the line is wet that it would be causing the reel to do it? I have no clue what is happening with it.

Well, I didn't think about it possibly not being the reel, but it could have simply been your line. If you got a loose loop formed in the line, it would hit the frame of the reel as the spool turned. Sounds similar to putting a playing card in the spokes of a bike wheel.

I don't think it was a loop in the line I didn't notice that there was that. It seems like it is only doing it when I have it on the water though. I don't have any idea what could be causing that, because the reel didn't go in the water or anything so I don't know what would make the difference between casting on the water and casting in the backyard, but it doesn't seem to be doing it when I am just casting it in the yard, both before and after I used it on the water

I've had two reels in the past year that have went back for repairs under warranty. The last came back and I immediately got rid of it. It too had issues on the retrieve. I think the tolerances of the reel were poor. As for the water, that would put the reel under a load more so than in the yard.

i know this might sound silly, but it is at least an easy check. i still use 5500c's, but once in a while one of them might get to clicking or thumping on the retrieve. it always feels like it is in the left side of the reel. here is what is usually the problem. one of the three thmb screws on the right side of the reel is loose. tighten it back up and smooth as silk again. you might want to check to make sure all of you screws that hold the reel together are tight. another thing that come to mind is the tensionor for your spool. if it is backed of too far, and you can move the spool back and forth with your thumb and cause the same problem. have not used such an advanced reel, but am sure some of the same problems and fixes apply.

Not sure if someone already asked but why didn't u just take it back to where u bought it from. The SX's are nice reels and u shouldn't have to deal with something like this with a new reel.

It sounds like he bought it online from TW so would require physically sending it back but I'm like you, if it's brand new, send it back and get another one.

Bought it from TW so I'd have to ship it back and wait for another, I was just seeing if there were any suggestions of an easy fix to avoid it. I have used it several times since and it has been, so I still have no idea what it was but it has worked mint since
