I was thinking while driving to an account that there's money making opportunities for the right person to offer on the water electronics training classes for boat owners.  Just a thought!  I know I'd spend my money on this before going out with a guide to watch him catch fish.   ;)

Hire a guide to just show you how to operate that equipment. They make a living using that stuff. Some offer just that service if you want.

I know some guides are including this as part of their advertising campaign.

If one lined up a bunch of anglers on a give day, with a body of water that has a lot to look at. You could block out 90 minute time slots and have them show up :-* Hummm ~roflmao

I've got a lot of learning to do yet. I can get them started and for a beginner I could overwhelm them but some anglers can still teach me a thing or two :-*

I would pay someone who could take me out on a lake with HDS equipment show me everything from setting everything up for the best picture. What to look for as far as structure , ledges, schooling fish , creek beds etc. at the same time show me different presentations to use at each type of situation and put the fish we see on the screens in the boat lol   I need an all around trip ! Would be even better on one of my local lakes ! But Lake Fork Next year would be better say around April !!!!   Hint hint

If you are at Lake Fork in April, you won't be thinking about learning electronics. Late May is not quite as intense, that is when I go.

I think more appropriate from an OEM sponsored classes with sign up. Could be a marketing approach to the benefit of teacher and OEM.   Just my early thoughts.  Guides would have to be authorize to demonstrate.   Kinda like earning your stripes to have the equipment.   I know more then a few guides that do not have full understanding of their electronics.  Just my personal experience.  However,  the potential is there.

For me electronics will play a bigger part of my fishing going forward because the amount of pressure on lakes is greater then ever.   For me my equalizer to catch more fish is actualizing the full potential of my electronics to locate more fish vs traditional routine casting lures to do my fish find for bass.   ~b~

There is a guy here who installs, sells, and teaches Lawrance product.  I think he is really one of there programmers.  But you can bring you boat by his house for and hour for a little charge for basic button pushing.  Or go on a half day or full day trip with him showing you everything that you will probably never use on it, for a much larger little charge.

I didn't end up using him other than to purchase a unit from him.  I didn't even have the money at time to let him install, so I did it myself with a few pointers from him.  I've had that unit for 2 1/2 years and thought I understood it all, but truthfully I never even went deep enough for it to matter, so I could have still been using a $85 special and a hand held GPS.  Well that changed on Easter week I took one week vacation to go to Toledo Bend and told myself I was gonna learn how to fish deep water.

Day one I went with instinct and went straight to shallow water, nothing but dinks.  Day two changed it up a bit in morning no better, afternoon I went deep and just played with the graph to find where fish should be acording to what I knew bass were supposed to do.  Day three went to those places and started fishing and learning the 2d and 3d imaging and seeing fish and still just not understanding, but I was learning that whole day fine tuning my sensetivity and just general concept of what was going on.  Day four I got into a bunch of fish, mostly white bass, but it was fish and there were some largemouth mixed in.  That afternoon I finally saw what everone, who is still learning there electronics, needs to see.  The fish went nuts and the screen did too.  In a matter of 45 min to and hour I put together a 22 to 23 lb bag and if you took the top five away I would have still had a 20 lb bag to go with.  It was constant 3, 4, 5, 6 back to back.  Awesome is all I can say about it.

Now since I've been witness to that I can drive over something and say there is no need stopping, or there not active but lets put a dropshot or football head on 'em, or hold on to your pole this is about to get fun.  I know I will need to go back shallow at certain times of the year, but now with the undstanding I have of my electronics I actually want to be deep.

I bought  Bird 798SI and 998SI this past spring and I'd pay somebody to teach me to use them.  Watched a bunch of Utube and played around but, would sure be nice to have somebody smart show me around..

wrench, I would gladly spend a half day or even the whole day doing just this...having a guide show me how he uses his electronics to pull up on an area and decide if he's going to fish it or not...

while motoring between spots, we could be talking about a lot of things...but on those spots, it'd focus on how the fish position on the structure, how to approach them from technique point, which species they likely are... and then take 10-30 minutes fishing to 'prove' what they are...then off to the next spot...

I would pay for this too.

I forgot to mention this but at the FLW Cup each year, and maybe at the tour events as well, Lowrance reps will take you out on the water for a demonstration. I'm sure there could be some instruction involved there as well.

Todd Driscoll did it at the Ouchita Cup two years ago and surprisingly he said there were not that many to take out. SOOO if you went to one of these events and there wasn't a line for the demo, then I bet you could get some great education straight from the Reps :-* Food for thought the next time you can reach out to one of these events.

If Todd sees this he can let us know if they do it at the Classic as well? I want to say they did but don't know for sure.

I know Humminbird was sponsoring seminars at area stores and larger boat dealers to educate their users.  They are few and far between but extremely popular.  I know enough to get around my electronics but I'm just missing that extra umph and hands on training would be optimum.  I would pay a premium price for the umph.   A dedicated weekend event sponsored by Lowrance and or Humminbird and they would flat be packed if promoted correctly.  Even have the pros available.  Kind like a sponsored BASS University.  Those are fun but with a electronics twist.  Hmmm....

Mike Cork

I need to figure out how to pitch this and to what person :-*

I could seriously use some on the water time with a well versed sonar user that's for sure !

What I would like to see and don't know if it's possible because of everyone's  location but the subject has been brought up before of having Ultimate Bass tournaments/ get togethers @ different regions in the country.
Maybe someplace like Kentucky Lake , Dale Hollow, Pickwick Lake or Santee Cooper or the like each one is quite a ways from me 4 + hour drive but would be doable for me to make with the right planning. And a lot  of our members fish these lakes already. So maybe a little UB fellowship , tournament and some of our resident Sonar experts in attendance to share some of these setup procedures and real world examples of how to put fish in the boat using sonar ? :)  could have one heck of a picnic too lol always got to have food !

I've talked to Doug V with Humminbird about Sillybass and my self driving up to him and paying him to do a day on the water learning HB units. He said that he could not do it due to not haveing a Captians license because it would be like hireing a guide. He also said that's why he does so many YouTube videos.

This is not a bad idea  :-*
I know I would be traveling 4-7hrs. depending on the part of the country. If we could RSVP enough members and each of those members paid an up front additional fee  :-\ Maybe one of the Reps. from these companies would be kind enough to give us a day of instruction.
Tricky subject do to the spread of the UB family throughout the states. Might be able to come up with enough members who are interested for two separate get togethers. One East of the Mississippi and on West of the Mississippi  8)

The Rep. would probably sell a few units as well. When a prospective user has more info about using a unit he is more willing to spend his hard earned cash on it. When he is overwhelmed by the technology of the unit he is reluctant to dig into his wallet.

Randy Kuhens on KY Lake offers that service. I wanted to book with him in May but he was already booked. I hope to next year. He sits in your boat and you work together getting it dialed in. Then you hit the water to play with it. Check out his class here.

Last week while on my Guided Trip on Lake Fork (Lance Vick) took the time to show me the In's and Outs of his Lowrance HDS 8 unit.  That was the first time (other than reading the threads here) that I'd seen how detailed those units are.

Marine Outlets here in Temple had a seminar last year by one of the Reps / Pros.  I want to say it was an all day event.  The place was packed with fisherman.

I'm considering buying a couple units and having them installed on my Stratos.  I just need to figure out what I want (+) accessories mounts etc.

Don ,
I thoroughly enjoyed your post on your guided trip to Fork.  That sounded like what I would want to try sometime. And sounded very Educational as well , did your experience with his HDS8 live up to your expectations ? The fish you caught to me looked like monsters lol at least compared to what we have here locally. Thanks for sharing that experience with us all !
