have a 1998 challenger 18 foot just repowered with 2005 xr6 150 hp merc nose is buried cant trim up without over reving only getting 50 mph

BassBUFF

Sounds like the motor is too high. What is the prop to pad distance?

Mike Cork

Either the motor is too high or the prop is too little. Since you just repowered I'd look at motor height first

dont know what you mean by pad distance lowered motor an inch and it still over reved how many rpms is to high on this motor and i have a 26 attwood ballistic prop 14.5 inche you would think that would do it

how do i install a trim stop

Mike Cork

I'm not familiar with an attwood prop but yes the numbers are good for size maybe even a little big but that would prevent over RPMs.

If you level your boats pad and then trim the motor down until the cavitation plate is level. The distance between your prop shaft and the bottom of your hull should be around 4" to start. At this point with a 26 pitch (stainless steel prop - dont know if an attwood is) prop you shouldn't be able to over rev the motor.

I'd have to look up the rev limit but 5850 sounds right, don't know for sure.

May be the prop spinning on the hub if everything else checks out.

leeMN

shouldnt be spinning on the prop things brand new

hey mike i really appreciate the help question where should the cavitation plate be in relation to all of this as far as hieght and how do i know where im at with the trim can i not change it boats nose is getting pushed down seems like i should be able to trim up to correct but when i do it over revs and the nose doesnt come up hull of boat has recessed pad goes in about 10 inches what should i do as far as measureing that 4 inches

Mike Cork

With the boat on the trailer, lay under it with a level on the pad (not the recess but the actual pad) have someone crank the tongue jack up or down as needed to get the pad level. Now place the level on the cavitation plate of the motor and trim it until it's level.

Now measure the distance from the prop shaft to the ground and then the difference from the boat pad to the ground. The boat should be 4 inches higher than the prop shaft.

There is a post somewhere here that describes this with illustrations. I'll see if I can find it.

hey thanks a lot mike ill try that i saw in the illistration a comment saying "If the boats not overpowered what if it is im over rating by 20 hp

Mike Cork

20 hp shouldn't be an issue. My comment there was for boats with "worked" motors or a 300 sitting on the back of a boat rated for 200.

With super powered boats it's still an okay starting point but how your hull will react at top end with excessive power could change the game completely and it becomes more of an ability to drive with chine.

That what it sounds like to me too. if you have a jack plate , lower the motor. Ive also seen new props spin on the hub .
