Does it save money to make them yourself

in time sure if you use/lose alot of jigs. i use soft plastics from top water to swimbaits to weightless to on the bottom. in the beginning it cost a little bit, but i have sold a few bags here and there and i pretty much only use the baits i make now so its worth it to me. plus its a hobby you can do when your not fishing :D

The original investment is too expensive to even consider money savings unless you intend to sell them. Like mentioned above, maybe if you use a lot of the same jig, you eventually maybe in a couple years recoup your cost. It's not only about materials, but about your time and electric you will spend. I have a breakdown of approximate cost to start up making jigs if you are interested. PM me and I will get it out to you.

I agree that in the short term the cost of getting started will be a bit high compared to how many jigs you could buy with the same amount of money. But, it can also be a fun hobby to get into as the others have said!
I've been molding my own for many years, and have a great deal of money invested, but I also sold jigs & other lures too at one time. Besides the business side, it's an addiction of mine. I own just about every mold that Do It makes, several that Hilts made, several older vintage molds and several custom molds! That and all the supplies needed can add up, but I added a little at a time over many years so it's not too bad!
I can now make just about anything I need, and when I need it, so there can be advantages to a hobby like this! There are worse things you could be doing with your time too! ~shade

You may want to consider buying pre-painted heads and adding a custom skirt. You can usually find a pack of 4-5 painted heads for around $5-7 depending on the components. I buy painted heads from http://lurepartsonline.com/ and http://www.fishboss.com/cbt.html and then I hand tie skirts with living rubber and silicone. This is a much more affordable option than investing in materials to build from scratch. Most of my jigs cost me between $1.50 and $2.50 which is nice when you consider jigs cost between $3.50 and $5.00 these days.
