before I spend hours doing research, I thought I would ask everyone's opinion or experience for a good Side Scan sonar for a canoe.  I am thinking it would have portability.  Any help/suggestions, etc would be helpful.

Also, I have never owned a fish finder, so any advice would be welcomed.

I use the fishing buddy in my canoe and it works well, good price point at under $200 as well

I have an aluminum flat back canoe/row boat that I bought a humminbird with DI for $300 this winter, it has a split screen between the traditional sonar and the DI, it's nice

I believe the fishing buddy has side imaging

I saw that for the Fishin Buddy.  I also saw the Piranha one, but it looks like the Fishin Buddy is better, but also cheaper.

Where are you finding the fishin buddy with SI?

It is actually side sonar to show what is off to the side of you.  Not SI like what newer technology is on newer fish finders

Ohhh got yah. I have my humminbird with the DI set up alot like the fishin buddies are designed, I just made up a rig for it so that I can pull it on and off easily, since I beat the crap out of the bottom of my boat and it wouldn't last long if I had it set up normally.

I have one of the old fishin buddy's they don't show structure but marks fish that's off to the side in distance from you. What impressed me about the one I have was when dropping the anchor it showed the plume of silt around the anchor when it hit bottom and also showed the plume of silt when I pulled the anchor up. I picked mine up at Bass Pro in Springfield at the outlet side for about a hundred dollars. The new one's can cost $250.00 or more but have more features than the originals. At the least it's good for tempreture and depth.

I built another portable using an old minkota transom mount trolling motor. I gutted the head then took apart the motor then cut the housing so there was only a square about four inches in size. This left me with an arch on the end of the shaft. I cut two slots in the arch for the clamp to slide thru. Fished the transducer wire up to the head made a flat mounting plate from a piece of 1/8 thick aluminum so i had a good surface to mount the bracket for the depth finder on and I was in business. The power wire fed out of the same hole that the power wire for the trolling motor came out of.

Thats a great idea!  I don't think it would work as well on my canoe, but great idea!  I love repurposing non working equipment!
