Most of the talk though is in a negative light it seems. Not much respect going on here.

bass1cpr - Not a bad observation.

just so you know...it's not about his talent, his abilities...

and when I see Ike on a show...that's when I realize how much I like the guy...he's calm, he's smart...he's 'on'...all without having to be an  :ass

makes me follow him more, root more for him in txt's...then, he blows up in the boat...and makes me think I need to reconsider...

sure we're 'talking about him'...but shouldn't it be because he tried hard and just came up short?  shouldn't the story be the touirnament, not some idiotic behavior?

-Shawn-

Right Now he is the Kurt/Kyle Busch of bass fishing.  Ton's of Talent and Pasion all spoiled by fit throwing.  ~b~

Yeah Shawn, I was about to make similar comparisons of athletes with great talent, but childish behavior/unsportsmanlike, etc.  I was in sports and saw it all the time and it made me just smh.  Most of the time it was people that liked the attention.  I would rather have mediocre or above average talent without the headaches than a superstar talent, but acts like a child when things don't go their way.  You are seeing this in the NFL.

Personally, I think he should be fined for acting in such a manner.

Luckily Ike can't hit anybody and spin them out because their in front of him. I"ve tried to give him some credit a couple of times for his talent but then he throws another over the top tantrum. I understand competative nature but being an  :ass  is still being is still being an :ass .

I can't believe some of the replies I have see on this subject. There are young men & women, high school boys & girls watching this and are getting the idea that if you lose you are the authorized to go totally out of your mind and destroy anything in site & people will like you and want your autograph and buy the stuff you use. I still remember the American Flag incident; same thing, and all that blowing and snorting, "what is that"? No I don' think we want our children, our friends or ourselves acting like that in front of one person or millions of people. Winning is great, and learning how to accept winning graciously is important,  but learning how to loose with dignity is more important. Sure loosing sucks and not fun but going nuts is not good and we as fishermen,  fathers and mothers should not reward that type of behavior by purchasing his endorsed merchandise simply because he uses it, or treating him more than what he is, a bad example to normal society.
I think I have said all I can say on this subject.  Very interesting though

-Shawn-

I just watched it again.......  He didn't scream or cuss o really throw a fit.  He smacked his rod once and through it overboard.  He never blamed the rod or any of his equipment, just smacked it because that was a 50K hit.

In the post tourney interview he seemed very gracious and gave keith props on the win.

The blowing is just Ikes act. It gets him and his sponsors attention.  I think it is overboard, but He brings more young veiwers into our sport than just about any other angler out there.

He also donates more money and time to youth fishing projects than anyother angler on tour.

So to me, I can deal with a 15 sec lapse in judgment to get what he brings to the sport.

that this is the second time it's happened 'before a camera'...that we've seen...

does that make any difference?

oh, by the way:  we could also talk about ESPN/film crews...needing to give the guy a moment...but they didn't.  Or more appropriately...leave that on the cutting room floor...

didn't mean to leave that out of the equation.  which come to think of it...puzzles me a bit and wonder what McKinnis might have to say about this...  if it was his choice...I'd have to say it taints my view of Jerry just a tad...

In my mind, it was just completely unnecessary all the way around.  The bigger story should be what Combs did...he took a HUGE risk by running instead of fishing close at hand rip rap for a keeper...

it IS an interesting discussion Shawn...not meaning to ruffle any feathers with my 'black/white' view...

-Shawn-

No ruffled feathers here.  I know what most of his act is, because I have been around him away from the water and he is a 110% different person.

This was not near as big of a deal as it originally assumed it was because of the discussion thats why I sat and watched it again.  I was thinking I missed some huge Fit.   Certainly more than what I saw anyway.

DBrooke

My thing is this, how many guys have you seen do that or worse in a tourney? For a LOT less money! I have seen grown men do worse than that over a $400 purse. I think some people just look to deep into it is all. Yes I do like the guy, no I don't agree when he goes into cursing fits, but overall he does represent what I have seen a lot of in my years of tourney fishing.

Oh and for the record, it's Iaconelli ;)

I haven't seen it, but I didn't condone his flag bit last time nor does it sound like this was fitting either.

I will comment on my experience with Ike though. During the last Classic here on the Red, I followed him on the first day carrying the camera operator. I talked to Ike before the tourney to introduce myself and find out his game plan. Before and during the tourney he was VERY focused, so much so theat he almost came off as a rude azz. But after the tourney it was like someone flipped a switch! Nicest guy you could ever talk to. He tied up to my boat as we locked back through and he was telling me exactly what and how he was fishing the area he was in. It was like talking to a different person than what he was in the morning.

DBrooke

So the REAL question here is.... Who's gonna get me some time to talk to him in Feb? lo lo

As a 19 year old, who just graduated high school last year, I dont think seeing Ike break a rod over the side of the boat and then throwing it off the boat is going to make me think " oh if Ike does it, it's fine if I do". If you are raised well by your parents seeing Ike on tv have a little fit once in a while doesn't make me, or I would assume anyone else near my age, think that we should all be doing it. If that is how a kid is thinking about it, they already somewhat think that way, Ike doing that is not going to completely change there mind just by doing that.

Giving to charity makes you nothing more than a guy that gives to charity.  Says nothing about ones character in this day and age unfortunately.  I don't think he's a bad guy at all.  His personality just wears on you.  Kinda like Gerald flat bill hat but I'm 40 years old trying to be a kid Swindle.  Pick a different train to ride lol.  It's why I love this country.  I'm free to think one guy's an idiot and the next guy can love him while we both get along.  Should be that way anyway but some people get butt hurt over complete strangers they like.  :o
