Is this a waste of time or do I need practice?  I do pretty good with soft body frogs around cover and in open water but I can't buy so much as a nudge in open water with a hollow frog.  Is this just not a good technique?

Open water frogging can be very productive. Learn to get a good side to side walking action with it  :-*

Ok ill keep at it.  I feel like I did when I first used a jig-clueless haha!

I've had some minimal success fishing open water with a hollow frog, but I've been throwing walk-the-dog style hard baits, and when the bite is on its EXTREMELY productive. I've only just gotten good enough to walk the dog when I want with my spro (I only have one rig w/o braid  ;D), so I haven't really given it a fair chance either.

It's best to have bait fish colored frogs for open water but not mandatory. Regular top water baits can be better but after the get shy of spook and popper type baits the frog can be a great change up :-*

I have minimal success with a hollow body in open water. I will fish it in open water around cover, and between cover, but if the majority of the water is open, I will go to a soft plastic frog over the hollow body.

In tournaments my partner and I, switch up. I throw a soft plastic frog and he throws a hollowbody. Somethimes the slower movement is the ticket
