I have read on the internet where a lot of people are wondering who supplies the base stock oils for Mercury and Yamaha. It is no real secret if you know where to look. Both base stocks of oil are supplied to Mercury and Yamaha by Citgo but, the additive package is from different companies.

This is a tough question. To say one is better than the other would take someone that has run both for an extended period, at least long enough to do some interal reaction, and then pull the motor down and look.

Take me, I keep a warranty on my Mercurys and am religious about using Mercury products. But haven't had a top end issue so I can't tell you what the inside looks like other than I haven't had a top end issue.

I have had great success with the Mercury package of oil and fuel additives and can't comment on the Yamaha stuff. However if I can get my mechanic to call me back I'll ask him what he thinks.

" the additive package is from different companies." thats the key difference in all oils and gas.

I know just with Mercury alone there is a pretty substantial difference in Premium and Premium plus its not just Price I know alot of people are price driven and buy things according to price not quality
I can tell you P plus is better and worth the little bit extra Im not going to go into all the test I have witnessed and my own personal experience but it is better in many different ways

(By the way on price driven like the difference in a real senko and a copy I think that is so funny not to buy the real thing. Well look these are cheaper and they dont even do what a senko is supposed to do lets buy them )

It's hard to balance price point with quality.  But with Merc oils you have premium, premium plus, and then DFI.  Major difference in price to the DFI but it's supposed to be the best.  It's funny, in years past it was recommended to run the DFI in the Opti but only the Premium Plus in the Opti Pro XS.

Classic242, Do you know who makes the walmart brand that everyone is  talking about in the other thread?

Mike,
In regard to your question about Walmart Supertech oil, it is packaged by Warren distributors but, the supplier of the base stock oil for Walmart Supertech is SOPUS (Shell Oil Products US). Now mind you that all Pennzoil TC-W3 oil is also supplied by SOPUS but, Walmarts Supertech is a different spec. than the Pennzoil and is not the same as the Pennzoil even though the base stocks are supplied by the same company. Each brand of TC-W3 oil has a different additive package to some degree. Some brands contain more additives than others and you get what you pay for, as the saying goes. You just can't go wrong using an OEM outboard motor oil. Now as I stated in another thread, my wifes 115 Johnson outboard is a carbed outboard and the previous owner before her used the Walmart Supertech oil and that is what she tells me to use in her outboard and it is now 15 years old. I don't see any problem using the Walmart Supertech TC-W3 oil in a carbed outboard but not in my Yamaha HPDI because it requires a different spec. oil. Just my two cents !!

Kinda seems like running walmart oil in a $15,000 motor would be like using an aluminum prop on a 250 hp
outboard Or trading in all your rods and reels for some 202's of 33's Or punching grass with a 1 oz weight on a spinning rod with 6 pound line can I do it yes   Do I want to no
well to think of it 6 pound line is cheaper than 20 pound so I guess I should go with the 6 pound since its cheaper right

1986 Mariner Inline 115. Nothing but Quicksilver Premium Plus and commonly run at 6200 to 6300 RPM with no oil issues. Of course, I tend to run 40:1 premix too.
