Fuel Octane vs Performance?

Has anyone experimented with different fuels to see if you gain any speed/economy by increasing the octane?

really dont see the need. if the boat goes over 60 mph and is using 87 octane

Octane ratings have nothing to do with performance in terms of power or speed or even fuel economy. Low octane (87) will ignite before the spark happens in a high compression engine which causes knocking. Higher octane fuel is needed in high compression engines to prevent the knock.
Using high octane in engines where it isn't needed is just a waste of money.

Yep, it's best to follow the engine manufacturer's recommendations for octane rating. You only have to meet the requirements, not exceed them. If 87 is the requirement, running 90 or 92 won't do anything but cost you more money. If the requirement is 90, then running 87 can decrease performance, cause engine damage, or both. There are exceptions, such as for modified engines, combustion chamber deposits, or the like, but otherwise you should be fine sticking to the requirements.
