Another thing that people don't think about is the angle that they're holding the rod at while setting the hook.  I fished last summer with a VERY GOOD guide on Kentucky Lake that specialized in deepwater Carolina Rigging.  He insisted that all c-rig hooksets should be swept to the side, instead of up.

Sure enough, the fish I side-swept on I hooked, and the few times that I forgot myself and went up with the rod were the fish I missed!

A simple thing, but a little detail that makes a world of difference too.
