I have a Plano clear plastic box that I carry some of my most productive lures in. I got it out last night to  do some tuning on my frogs. I found out that I had thrown a salt impregnated plastic worm in on top of the frogs and it was melted down on top of them. It peeled off of the frogs pretty easily but then I noticed that the hooks on all but a couple of the frogs were rusted pretty badly. I learned two things from this 1.Keep the salty worms separate from other lures and  2. Which frogs have hooks that rust and which don't. I will replace some of the frogs with the same brands but from now on I will keep an eye out for ones that have the hooks that are plated so they don't rust as easily.

Had the same problem and did a few things to prevent it. I keep worms in bags, salt is corrosive and will rust hooks, tarnish spinnerbait blades and so on. I don't put worms away wet, i leave them on deck and clean up at the end of the day. I put rice in all boxes that hold lures, and terminal tackle. put enough to fill 1 slot in your box in a mesh bag or old panty hose(ask wife first!). Inexpensive, absorbs a lot of water and you will see a big reduction in rusty hooks. hope this helps.

Rice works. Silica packs work as well. They should be free at any pharmacy or sometimes shoe stores.

I use the waterproof plano boxes with silica packs.  Gotta keep those plastics out of boxes with hooks. Salt and water retention with those.

Use Rice?? Never thought of it, but I am going to try it out. I have a deck extention on my nitro that is not water tight and I use it alot for my plastic boxes. Guess I need to get me some uncle Ben's

Gotta do this. I use waterproof boxes but a little extra never hurts.

Use a waterproof box also. That will help in places that arent water tight.

Mike,  even the water proof ones seem to sweat inside the locker. Right now I have blue rust stoppers in some of the box's & they seem to help. Tryed moving box's to rear dry lockers, but that made it hard to get to them. but thanks for the idea.

I have Plano waterproof boxes for my hooks and hard baits and they don't seem to sweat but I did learn if you open them in the rain and don't dry them out after fishing your stuff is ruined.

On my boxes full of $60-$200 swimbaits I drill holes in the bottom and lid so that excess moisture can escape. A couple of silica gel packs won't hurt anything either.
